The Orlando Magic are hiring Dallas Mavericks assistant Josh Broghamer, sources told Mavs Roundtable. Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported the hire first.
Player development was Broghamer's primary responsibility across three seasons under Jason Kidd. Sean Sweeney has now taken a second coach off that Dallas bench.
Popeye Jones was among the 11 coaches the Magic announced on July 6, a group that also included Joe Prunty, Greg Buckner, Tom Bialaszewski, Riley Crean, Jon Harris, Ben Johnson, Jacqlyn Poss, Mfon Udofia, D.J. Bakker, and Shannan Lum. Jones spent last season as an assistant in Dallas, his second stint with the franchise.
Orlando named Sweeney the 16th head coach in franchise history on June 1. He had spent last season as the San Antonio Spurs' associate head coach. Two of Kidd's five seasons in Dallas overlapped with Broghamer's, and the two worked the same Milwaukee bench under Kidd for four years beginning in 2014.
Broghamer's first NBA job was a 2013 video internship in Phoenix under Jeff Hornacek. A year later he was running video in Milwaukee. He then spent 2018 through 2023 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, working under four head coaches before Kidd brought him to Dallas.
In Las Vegas last July, Broghamer coached the Mavericks' Summer League team through Cooper Flagg's first games as a professional. He also ran Flagg's pregame workout routine across the 2025-26 season.
Flagg averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.9 blocks in 70 games, all of them starts, while shooting 46.8% from the field. He led Dallas in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. The NBA named him Rookie of the Year on April 27. At 19 years and 112 days old at the end of the regular season, he was the second-youngest winner of the award behind LeBron James.
Dallas finished 26-56. The Mavericks posted a defensive rating of 116.5, which ranked 20th in the league. Their offensive rating of 111.1 ranked 26th.
Masai Ujiri was named president of basketball operations on May 4. Kidd and the Mavericks mutually agreed to part ways 15 days later. Mavericks coach Dusty May was hired to replace him and has since built out a staff that includes Willie Green, Joe Boylan, Garrett Temple, Drew Williamson, and Mody Maor. Broghamer and Phil Handy were the two assistants retained from Kidd's staff. Handy is now the only one left.
Frank Vogel, who carried the associate head coach title in Dallas last season, has the same job with the Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr. Jay Triano is back in Portland, working for first-year head coach Micah Nori.
Orlando went 45-37 last season and reached the playoffs as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Magic built a 3-1 lead over top-seeded Detroit in the first round before losing the series in seven games. Jamahl Mosley was fired on May 4 after five seasons.
Dallas carries 16 players on standard contracts and must trim the roster to 15 before opening night.
