Madeleine McCann‘s younger brother is preparing to swim for Scotland in a major international competition later this month — and he has his eye on the Olympics in two years.

Sean McCann, 21, and his twin sister Amelie were just 2 years old when Madeleine, then 3, disappeared from the family’s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

Almost two decades on, Sean will be taking part in the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The multi-sport event is held every four years and brings together athletes from across the Commonwealth of Nations, most of which are former territories of the British Empire.

This year, the event will take place in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, from Thursday, July 21, to Sunday, Aug. 2.

Team Scotland shared on its official website that Sean would be representing his nation in aquatics, making his Commonwealth Games debut at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

According to his Scottish Swimming profile, the distance freestyler previously represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in 2023, competing in the 400-meter and 1500-meter freestyle finals.

Sean, who studies chemical engineering at Loughborough University in England, is also part of the National Open Water Development Squad and qualified for the 2025 European Open Water Championships, per the website.

In his profile on the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust website, written some time in late 2023 or early 2024, Sean said that he first entered competitive sport as an 8-year-old, when he joined a triathlon club, before starting at a swimming club and being chosen to swim at City of Leicester — Leicestershire’s performance swimming club — at age 10.

He wrote at the time that he was hoping to compete in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as well as the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Sean has largely stayed out of the public eye in the years since his sister went missing, concentrating on his studies and swimming. He explained on the trust’s website that he has “had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4 a.m. multiple mornings each week to train, since the age of 11.”

However, his family was back in the news last year after a woman, Julia Wandelt, claimed that she was Madeleine and was accused of harassing and stalking his parents, Kate and Gerry McCann.

In October 2025, Sean prepared a statement that was read out in court on his behalf, in which he said he’d blocked Wandelt on social media and described her actions as “strange and upsetting,” PEOPLE reported at the time.

The following month, Wandelt was found guilty of harassing the McCanns but not of the more serious charge of stalking.
