As the Dallas Cowboys officially transition from offseason to preseason with the start of training camp, Madden 27 has released its rookie rankings and surprise, safety Caleb Downs made another splash. And so did Malachi Lawrence, for that matter, as both are ranked considerably higher than their draft position.
Meanwhile, owner Jerry Jones, extremely briefly, revisited the failed trade for Maxx Crosby while dancing around tampering rules. That was the interesting part of a kickoff press conference where Jones sure sounded high on his Cowboys.
The preseason has started, so here we go.
Madden 27 just came out with its rookie rankings, and in a theme of this offseason, Downs is tied for first with the Arizona Cardinals’ Jeremiyah Love with an 82 rating.
The Cowboys’ other first-round pick, edge rusher Lawrence, tied for ninth with a rating of 78.

Remember when speculation about the Cowboys landing Las Vegas Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby dominated the early part of the offseason? Eventually, the Baltimore Ravens put together a big package for him, then deemed Crosby to have failed their physical, so after all that he’s still in Las Vegas.
Jones stirred the pot a little on Tuesday, July 28. In the press conference to kick off training camp, Jones indicated he would still consider making personnel moves, such as trades, to help the team. He was then asked why the team potentially walked away from a Maxx Crosby trade earlier this offseason.
"We didn't (walk away)," Jones said. "There's nothing more to elaborate on."

To say much more could be tampering, and Jones did add that Crosby is "completely a Raider" and "we shouldn't be having that conversation."
Crosby, meanwhile, is set to begin camp with the Raiders on Wednesday, July 29.
The end of August is supposed to be a time of optimism for NFL teams, and Jones played his part at a press conference to kick off training camp in Oxnard, California.
Jones’ take: ”We have the goods, so to speak, to really change up parts of the team … 9 of the 11 coaches on defense. That's a material change. So what I'm excited about is that I really believe we can do something."
"We know that changing out and starting new can obviously create quite a challenge, but I like what we've got to work with. I, of course, have a lot of confidence in our head coach, Schotty (Brian Schottenheimer), and I have a lot of confidence in the coaches that he's involved.”
As a measure of how drama-free Dallas’ offseason (mostly) was, one of the “controversies” was how Dallas would approach free agent receiver George Pickens. As it turns out, they put a franchise tender on him, he signed it and now is with the team, ready to practice at training camp.
Jones is fired up to see how this works out and is also happy with the way Dallas handled the situation.
”I hope that he comes out here and is the most prolific, successful receiver in the NFL this year,” Jones said. “Now, how would you like to be a free agent, and, with his credentials, and step out there and have a year like that? So I wish him all of that because if that happens, that was good for us and we did it the way that we thought was best for everybody concerned.”
Dallas has its first practice of training camp on Wednesday, July 29, at River Ridge Playing Fields in Oxnard, California. Practice starts at 11:45 a.m. local time (10:45 a.m. MT/9:45 a.m. CT). Practices are free. These are local times (Pacific) for those who want to go.
