The Madden 27 ratings were released at the end of July, but the numbers remain a striking reflection of how dramatically expectations have changed for the New England Patriots.

EA Sports gave New England an 86 overall team rating entering the 2026 season. That placed the Patriots in a tie with the Denver Broncos for fifth-best in the NFL and gave them the second-highest mark among AFC teams.

Only the Los Angeles Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens received higher overall ratings.

A video game cannot predict how New England’s season will unfold. The ratings do, however, offer a snapshot of how the Patriots are perceived nationally following their surprising run to the Super Bowl. New England is no longer being treated as an rebuilding team with an intriguing young quarterback. It is being viewed as one of the NFL’s most complete contenders.

Christian Gonzalez Earns Elite Madden 27 Rating

Christian Gonzalez received the highest rating on New England’s roster. The Patriots cornerback entered Madden 27 as a 98 overall, making him the highest-rated player at his position. Gonzalez fell only two points short of the game’s exclusive 99 Club.

That rating reflects his emergence as one of the NFL’s premier defensive players. It also places him at the front of a secondary that could again be one of New England’s biggest strengths.

Safety Kevin Byard received an 86 overall rating, while cornerback Carlton Davis checked in at 85. Marcus Jones earned an 82, and Craig Woodson received an 83.

The starting group is highly regarded, although the ratings also identify a potential concern. No other Patriots cornerback received a mark higher than 71, highlighting the uncertainty behind Gonzalez, Davis and Jones.

New England’s pass-rushing group faces similar questions. Harold Landry III leads the team’s edge defenders with an 82 overall rating, but no other player at the position reached 80.

Milton Williams is the highest-rated member of the defensive line at 86. Christian Barmore received a 79, giving the talented defensive tackle an opportunity to outperform his initial rating.

Rookie linebacker Gabe Jacas also drew attention with a 76 overall mark before playing his first regular-season snap.

Drake Maye’s Rise Transformed the Patriots

No rating better illustrates New England’s rapid turnaround than Drake Maye’s. Maye opened Madden 27 as a 92 overall and the sixth-highest-rated quarterback in the game. He began the previous edition at 78 overall, making his rise one of the most dramatic among NFL quarterbacks.

That jump is about more than video game recognition. Maye’s development from a promising young player into a franchise quarterback changed the direction of the Patriots. His success accelerated New England’s rebuild and raised the standard for what the team should accomplish in 2026.

The Patriots also surrounded Maye with a strong collection of skill players.

A.J. Brown leads New England’s receivers with an 89 overall rating. Kayshon Boutte earned an 80, while offseason addition Romeo Doubs received a 79.

Hunter Henry checked in at 86 after establishing himself as one of Maye’s most dependable targets. TreVeyon Henderson leads the backfield at 82, ahead of Rhamondre Stevenson at 77.

Stevenson’s rating could be considered one of the team’s more notable snubs after his productive 2025 season.

Patriots Still Have Something to Prove

The offensive line received respectable ratings, although there are areas of uncertainty. Mike Onwenu leads the unit at 86, followed by Alijah Vera-Tucker at 83 and Morgan Moses at 82. Will Campbell received an 81, giving New England four established blockers with ratings above 80.

Jared Wilson, however, received a 70 as he transitions from left guard to center. That number reflects his limited experience at the position more than it does his long-term potential. If Wilson handles the move successfully, he could become one of the Patriots’ quickest risers once EA Sports begins updating its ratings during the season.

The Madden 27 ratings are no longer breaking news. Their larger message, though, has not become any less relevant.

New England enters the season with a 98-rated shutdown cornerback, a 92-rated franchise quarterback and one of the highest-rated rosters in football. After years of uncertainty, the Patriots are once again receiving the respect reserved for legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

Now they must prove those expectations are justified.
