Luke Donald has been recognized in the King’s Birthday Honors List with an order of the British Empire award.
On June 11, the Englishman was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to golf. It is awarded to someone for making a great impact in their line of work. [It doesn't come with the distinction of being called 'Sir.' That requires a knighthood, like Nick Faldo was previously awarded.]
“I am very grateful to be receiving this honor,” Donald said. "It is a proud moment for me, for my family and for all the people I have been fortunate to work with throughout my career, both individually and in the Ryder Cup."
He has been the victorious captain of the last two European teams in the Ryder Cup, and is slated to attempt to become the first captain to win three in a row outright in 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland.
“This is very much recognition of what we have achieved together," Donald continued. "That, of course, includes all the players, vice captains, caddies and staff who were part of the Ryder Cup victories in Rome and New York. They were special experiences, and I am determined that we go on to enjoy further success at Adare Manor next year.”
Since turning pro in 2001 after a collegiate career at Northwestern University, Donald has won 17 times around the world and reached world No. 1 on four separate occasions for a total span of 56 weeks. Donald was named PGA Tour Player of the Year in 2011.
He previously was made a Member of the British Empire in 2012 for his services to golf in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List. The OBE sits one rank higher than the MBE in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and behind only the rank of Commander (CBE). The awards are handed out twice a year in the UK - once at New Year, and then again on the monarch's official birthday.
