Even though he was almost always considered a backup option, Lucas Beraldo has turned things around in just a few months thanks to the confidence shown in him by head coach Luis Enrique. He was expected to leave at the end of the season, but the versatile Brazilian now appears set to establish himself at PSG for the long term.
Beraldo, 22, joined Paris Saint-Germain during the January 2024 transfer window, alongside Gabriel Moscardo, but unlike his compatriot, he was not loaned out by the club. For nearly two years, many questioned why PSG had signed the Brazilian defender from São Paulo.
But Enrique likely already had an idea in mind, and it has paid off. This season, the PSG coach repositioned Beraldo in midfield, and suddenly the Brazilian's talent became evident, including on the European stage.
In addition, during the UEFA Champions League final, the 22-year-old did not hesitate when taking Paris Saint-Germain's fifth and final penalty. On the back of all that, while a departure had been mentioned, the discussion has now shifted toward a contract extension.
Under contract with PSG through 2028, Beraldo has no desire to leave the French capital. According to PSG Inside-Actus, an insider, he had already signed an extension before the start of the Ligue 1 season. The move reportedly has Luis Enrique's approval, who greatly appreciates the qualities of the former São Paulo player.
"The Brazilian is determined to give everything this season to establish himself permanently in PSG's rotation, regardless of the position where the coach calls on him," the insider said, adding that the extension will be made official before a presentation of the players who have renewed their contracts ahead of PSG's first Ligue 1 match of the season against Rennes on Sunday, Aug. 23.
It would be a reward for a player who has been compared to Andrea Pirlo and Sergio Busquets by observers after several outstanding Champions League performances. Just a few months earlier, he had left almost everyone indifferent since signing for Paris Saint-Germain. Lucas Beraldo is now expected to sign with the back-to-back European champions through 2030.
He is also likely to receive a salary increase. Beraldo currently earns 3.2 million euros per year at PSG, which is not a high salary by the club's standards.
In other news, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, PSG is very interested in the young Japanese keeper Zion Suzuki, 23, for this summer transfer window, and discussions to sign him have already begun and are progressing rapidly.
