In an interview with 104.5 ESPN released on Wednesday, Derek Curiel revealed that he suffered an injury ahead of his sophomore season with LSU baseball. The center fielder broke his ankle in November.
"I had three weeks to prepare for the season," Curiel said. "It was my back foot, and it was kind of hard for me to load into my back leg. Obviously, I’m a leg lift guy.”
Curiel finished the season with a .353 average with a .431 on-base percentage and .526 slugging. Curiel scored 64 runs and hit six homers.
Curiel is now a draft-eligible sophomore. He was a key part of LSU's College World Series team in 2025 and was the SEC's preseason player of the year in 2026. Curiel's 2026 output was slightly below the lofty projections, but perhaps the injury played a role.
A few social media rumors were hinting at Curiel's injury in the preseason, though nothing official was ever confirmed.
“Everyone on our team got injured at some point, and it was just very unfortunate,” Curiel said. “That’s why the season started how it did. I feel like I showed some toughness progressing through that and not giving up.”
Most expect Curiel to turn pro after the draft in July, though he did tease an LSU return in the same interview.
