DULUTH, GA — Louisville women’s basketball had been here before.
The Cardinals were in another close game with Duke a month ago, this time for the ACC Tournament championship. Like in the teams' regular-season showdown, however, they couldn't make the final play.
The second-seeded Cardinals had a four-point lead in the final minute but gave it up before the game went into overtime. Top-seeded Duke used the extra period to secure back-to-back ACC Tournament championships via the 70-65 victory on Sunday at the Gas South Arena.
Duke outscored Louisville, 10-5, during overtime to deny the Cardinals of their second ACC Tournament crown in the team's first title game appearance since 2023. Imari Berry led UofL in scoring for a second straight game with 18 points.
Louisville opened the game strong and had the early lead and led by as many as 11 points during the second quarter. But the Blue Devils used a 5-0 run to take a 51-49 lead at the beginning of the fourth. Berry responded with a jumper before Taj Roberts converted Istanbulluoglu’s steal into a layup to go back in front during a 6-0 run.
Turnovers and scoring droughts continued to plague Louisville at the wrong time. Duke also got to the line significantly more than the Cardinals did, going 18-for-26 at the free throw line (Louisville was 6-for-9).
Louisville will have the week off as it awaits its NCAA Tournament seeding. The Cards are projected to be a No. 3 seed in the Sacramento 2 region.
