WASHINGTON — From the last team in the standings to the last team standing, the Louisville Kings are champions of the United Football League.
The Kings rallied from a 16-7 halftime deficit to beat the DC Defenders 27-20 in Saturday’s United Bowl at Audi Field, ending their inaugural season on a six-game winning streak.
Powering the comeback: an opportunistic defense and a two-headed rushing attack.
In a homecoming of sorts, Howard graduate Ian Wheeler scored what proved to be the decisive touchdown, a 44-yard run on the first snap of the fourth quarter to give the Kings a 20-16 lead. Less than three minutes later, James Robinson followed with a 16-yard score to cap off a run of 20 unanswered points for Chris Redman’s team.
Robinson’s score came two snaps after cornerback Cameron Dantzler picked off Defenders backup quarterback E.J. Perry – relieving an injured Jason Bean – and covered 49 yards on the return.
That was the third takeaway of the game for coordinator Jamie Sharper’s unit, which delivered a crucial turnover on downs with the reigning champs looking for a game-tying touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
