Louisville did not look sharp in the first half and were down 2 at halftime. However in the second half a totally different showed up on the floor. The Cards turned up the heat offensively and defensively which led to them outscoring Miami 27-12 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Miami cut the lead to 8 and Imari Berry put on a scoring clinic. She had 11 of her 16 points in a two minute span and helped close the door on Miami’s hopes.

Elif Istanbulluoglu played a huge part in the victory. Coach Walz said, “I thought Elif played extremely well. I thought she had a big time game for us…. she BATTLED with 0 [Ra Shaya Kyle]. Probably one of the most physical games she’s played and a pretty darn impressive stat line: 23 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and only 2 turnovers.“

Coach Walz was not pleased with his team’s slow start. “We found a way to win but it was ugly. It was not at all a good showing for us. Really disappointed with our effort, but I was a little concerned this morning with our effort at shoot around. We were not focused. We were not sharp and that’s exactly how we played.” However he added, “When you don’t play well and you can still find a way to win you’ve got to be excited.”

He was also disappointed in the uncharacteristically bad play of Laura Ziegler. She had 0 point, 9 rebounds, and 3 turnovers. “Her worst game she’s played in a Louisville uniform. The mental side of it she was absolutely out of it.” He added, “She can’t do that if we’re going to win.”

Next up the Cards play Pitt at the Yum on Sunday. The game is at 2PM and can be seen on The CW.
