‘Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum’ Sets Pre-Christmas 2027 Release

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have set a Dec. 17, 2027 theatrical release for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

The Oscar-winning team behind the blockbuster The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are reuniting to produce two new films from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth for Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. Zane Weiner is also producing.

LotR,...so I am in.
But I am curious...was this based off of information in the Silmarillion or are they just using the world and characters and breaking out into their own storytelling?

I'm skeptical at this point too. It's not based on the Silmarillion (mainly first age) or really anything. It's mostly made up for the movie. There's a little bit on it in the appendices and then maybe a dozen or so pages that mention it in the books. It might just be PTSD but I have a GoT S7 and S7 vibe right now. Peter Jackson being involved is the only thing giving me hope.

You have to think that the people involved are pretty good at what they do...and very aware that the bar is set impossibly high for anything LotR

The same team couldn't save the Hobbit. Granted they started behind the eight ball thanks to WB and del Toro but they still put it out.

This team was also very good at staying faithful and following the source material for LotR. The parts they deviated from are some of the worst parts of the movies. Gollum is going to mostly be original and their original works have been hit or miss. King Kong and Mortal Engines weren't that great. Closer to the Hobbit than LotR. Heavenly Creatures though was really good.

So with all of that, I'm skeptical. I'm hoping it's great since LotR is my all time favorite franchise. I was deep into the books before the movies. I'm going to be cautious though in the lead up to it.

Yeah see, Im a fan... read Tolkein back in the seventies...but never went back for a re read.
Im one of those that enjoyed all the movies...the Hobbit specifically had a ton to live up to with the animated movie having already been made decades earlier....although I really did not like how,...Dwarves are a primary race in the entire set of movies...and they didnt show a real Dwarf until the end when Thorins cousin showed up...because Thorin and the crew...well,...they were way off base.
