We often speak about how bad offensively Anthony Volpe of the New York Yankees is, but his defensive problems aren't exactly something to just push off.
Volpe, who actually won a Gold Glove, has gotten worse on the defensive side of things ever since.
It's very unfortunate that he hasn't been the player that the Yankees have been hoping for over the past few years.
However, instead of continuing to hope he'll be something different, one reporter believes the Yankees have him in the wrong position. Volpe, who currently plays shortstop, is now being viewed as a player who could find some success as a second baseman.
“Anthony Volpe has a second baseman’s arm and he plays shortstop,” Joel Sherman said on “The Michael Kay Show,” via YouTube. “And I think when he makes mistakes in the field, I think it’s often because he’s the Tasmanian Devil trying to hurry things up to... lessen the need for his arm.”
“I just keep always wondering, is he just going to end up being a successful player as a second baseman outside of New York?” Sherman said.
As Sherman touched on here, everything that he's saying is more than fair. The more interesting part is that he believes that Volpe could be a legitimate second baseman on a different team.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, even if they decide to move on from him, I don't think there's much of an opportunity to send Volpe to a different squad and get a decent return. He just hasn't done enough in Major League Baseball to suggest that he's even a decent player, even if some teams have hope that he can be better at second base like Sherman does.
Volpe, however, has shown that he can be good at moments. I don't think that will translate to another team if he gets traded, but it's an interesting talking point.
I don't think Yankees fans would be surprised to see him do well, too.
