NEW YORK – Jose Caballero was back in the Yankees’ lineup Friday night, with Anthony Volpe on the bench.

This will be an interesting waltz at shortstop, conducted by manager Aaron Boone, who spoke with both players individually and insisted that they’ll each find playing time.

“I’ll make the decision every day,’’ Boone said of his starting shortstop, prior to Friday's series opener against the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

But the new wrinkle here is Volpe being asked to work out at second base “just to have an added layer of flexibility’’ on days when Volpe is not in the lineup,’’ Boone said.

“Ready to go,’’ said Volpe, keeping his responses clipped following Friday’s batting practice.

Volpe has limited experience at second base in the minors, but he’s willing to do what’s required.

“I don’t write the lineup. I’m ready to go,’’ Volpe said. “I’ll put my work in.’’

Caballero spent the minimum 10 days on the injury list due to fractured right middle finger and Boone telegraphed that the speedy, self-assured Caballero would return to his regular role at shortstop.

“Glad to get him back,’’ said Boone. “Hopefully he provides that spark that he does in a lot of different aspects of the game.’’

Late Thursday night, the Yankees chose to option slugging, lefty-hitting outfielder Spencer Jones to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, keeping both Volpe and right-handed hitting utility player Max Schuemann on the active roster, along with Caballero.

Boone said it was “a really tough call’’ to option Jones, who “held his own pretty well’’ and “the last two days felt he was having some good at-bats’’ despite not getting the desired results.

But the pitching matchups next week at Kansas City influenced Jones’ option, and Caballero and Schuemann can each play the outfield.

“Cabby’s versatility comes into play, again, with Anthony here,’’ Boone said of a player who can handle multiple positions.

Boone also mentioned his desire to get Cody Bellinger a DH day at Kansas City, and to give Aaron Judge a full day off during this stretch of 13 straight games.

As it relates to the Caballero-Volpe dynamic, “these things have a way of working themselves out,’’ said Boone.

The manager called it “a good situation to be in, because we have two players we feel can play vital roles in us winning games.

“As I’ve told them each, it’s not going to be the perfect scenario every single day,’’ Boone said. “You may like or not like a decision on a given day, but at the end of the day we’re all working for the same thing.

“And it’s my job to try and put you in the best possession to be successful.’’
