It was a fun night for the Logansport Savings Bank youth baseball team as they reigned in the rain.

LSB defeated Zagajewski Construction 11-3 Friday night to win the Logansport Youth League Baseball Tournament at Crain Field.

It’s been a dynasty for LSB (16-1) as they won their second championship in three years and competed in their fourth straight championship game.

LSB coach Drew Richey and his three sons Paxton, Harrison and Landon have been a big part of the dynasty. Landon is an 11 year old on this year’s team while the older boys have moved up.

“First off, hat’s off to the Zagajewski team. They’re a great team. They’ve had a great week,” coach Richey said. “I have nothing but respect for their players and coaches. With that being said, our group has been at the top all season long and they kind of proved it tonight. Our pitching wasn’t as crisp as it’s been the whole year, but we still got the job done. It was an ugly game and we only gave up three runs.

“That 12-year-old trio of Korbin Fritz, Bryce Hagerty and Zach Grenert finished their career 54-12 (.818) in Little League and made it to the championship game of the tournament every year. And they were big contributors every year, so a heck of a run for those three guys.”

Both teams had to battle pitch counts from earlier in the week to reach the championship game.

LSB ace Bryce Hagerty pitched 1 2/3 innings. He gave up his first hit of the season when Travis Blount Jr. hit a double to left center with two outs in the second.

Bryce put up numbers similar to his older sister Brooklynn did for the Logansport softball team as Bryce struck out 80 in 30 innings pitched for the season (2.7 per inning). He also led the team in hits (25).

He wasn’t even the MVP of the league, as that honor would go to teammate Korbin Fritz, who hit .786 with eight home runs and was also one of the top pitchers and defensive players in the league.

Teammate Zach Grenert hit five home runs and led the team with 28 RBIs and all three players will be among the top players for the Logansport 12U All-Star team this summer.

“For the All-Star team, it is a possibility that they will be 1-2-3 in our lineup,” Richey said. “So yeah, all three are really good players.”

Hagerty had a triple, single and two RBIs in the win. Fritz had a home run and two RBIs.

LSB had just three hits and Zagajewski had just one hit in the contest, as there were a lot of walks. Zagajewski pitchers struck out 11 but walked 15. LSB pitchers struck out 15 but walked seven.

It was a healthy league overall, Richey said. The league had eight teams consisting of 9-12 year olds.

“They probably averaged 13 or 14 players per team,” he said, adding that LHS varsity coach Dan Frye will have talent to work with in future years.

“I think there’s a lot of talent in the pipeline," Richey said. "This group of kids will be in the junior high program next year and there’s some talent going into that freshman class and that sophomore and junior class. So I think there’s a lot of good players coming up.”

Zagajewski’s Paul Muller earned the league Mental Attitude Award. Tate Dogs’ Kash Long was named the Rookie of the Year.

Many of the players and coaches will stay busy with baseball this next month during the All-Star season.

Logansport is hosting a Town & Country 10U District Tournament July 7-13 and a Town & Country 12U Semi-State Tournament July 15-20.
