Local track and field athletes returned to competition after a layoff. Astoria hosted Warrenton and Tillamook on Thursday, April 2 for a dual meet. Over last weekend, Knappa took part in the Estacada Small School Invite and Oregon commit Jayden Warner took part in the elite Oregon Relays.
Here are some compete results for this past week in track
Tillamook takes the win at Astoria Middle School
The Tillamook track and field team took a victory over Astoria on Warrenton Thursday afternoon at Astoria Middle School.
The Cheesemakers defeated Astoria 92 to 52 in their head-to-head competition and then defeated Warrenton by a score of 118 to 21 in the boys category. Tillamook girls also took the victory in both as they beat Astoria 82 to 55 and defeated Warrenton 108 to 10. Astoria boys defeated Warrenton by a score of 103.5 to 31.5 and Astoria defeated Warrenton 101 to 11.
Individual standouts for Astoria on the track included Dominick Cayetano Cruz in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Cruz won both events and set a season best of 24.06 in the 200 meters.
Turner Boslar ran a personal best of 4:41.97 in the boys 1500 meters. This was good enough for second place behind Tillamook senior Ryan Sheets. Recker Harvey claimed victory in the boys 3000 meters with a time of 10:26.18. Tristan Schauermann took first in the 110 meter hurdles in a season best time.
In the field events, Magnus Kryzanek was victorious in the shot put and finished second in the discus. Teammate Jude Rochon had a good day as he finished third in the discus with a personal best throw of 109’0 and finished second in the triple jump behind Tillamook senior Griffyn Boomer. Freshman duo Kalium Junes and Declan Nye both finished in the top five in the javelin. Junes placed second after throwing a personal best 140’8 and Nye was fourth after a throw of 118’11. Junior Timothy Rhoades got third place for Astoria in the long jump with a personal best.
On the girls side, Addie Earl finished second in the girls 400-meter dash in a personal best of 1:07.25. Roberta Chavez and Paige Kindred each got second in the shot put and discus respectively behind Tillamook thrower Rylee Huerta. Sofia Nygaard took first in the javelin with a season best throw of 107’2 and Chavez finished third with a season best of 84’4. In the pole vault Astoria junior Kylie Tremain was the only competitor to clear a height and took home the victory with a jump 6-feet-10 inches. In the long jump Astoria swept the first three spots with Sophia Rickenbach, Clara Moore and Keturah Jackson finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Moore and Jackson would double in the triple jump and finished 1st and 2nd.
For Warrenton, it was mixed both on the track and off.
Reuben Ramirez finished third in the 100 meter dash in a season best of 12.27 and ran a personal best in the 400 meters of 55.01. Chance Huntley ran a personal best of 29.68 in the 200-meter dash.
In the field events, senior pair Ashley Wiley and Riggs Miethe both set personal best throws in the shot put, while junior Jose Alcantar set a personal best in the discus. In the pole vault, Declan Wallace and Owen Cross finished first and second with Wallace netting a season best in the process. Tanner Nichols jumped personal bests in both the long jump and triple jump.
On the girls side, Brenna Qualm took first in the 100-meter dash and finished second in the 200 meters. The 13.29 was a season best for the senior and she also set a season best in the 200 meters of 27.37 to finish behind Tillamook junior Adrian Vogel.
In another meet, Warrenton’s school record holder traveled to his future home Hayward Field for the Oregon Relays.
Warner took part in three events over the course of the two day event.
The senior finished 18th in the 3000 meters in a 3A leading time of 8:43.58, finished 17th in the 3200 meters in a time of 9:16.09 and finished 17th in the 2 miles with a time of 9:19.24. All the races were won by BYU commit Malachi Schoenherr of 6A Sheldon High School.
Knappa boys distance strong at Estacada
It should be no surprise that the Knappa boys distance team had a strong showing in the Small School Invite over the weekend.
The Loggers traveled to Estacada for their first big meet of the season and didn’t disappoint.
Knappa boys finished fifth overall out of 20 teams and the girls had a respectable eighth place finish against tough competition.
For the boys it was on the strength of their distance team as the Loggers accumulated 61.5 total points to finish one point behind 4A Tillamook and only 12 behind 4A Estacada. Molalla took home the victory in the boys bracket and Tillamook girls out dueled Molalla to take home the victory.
Knappa boys had victories from Paul Thompson in the 400 meters and Wyatt Jacobson in the 1500 meters. The Loggers had strong performances from Oskar Peitsch in the 3000 meters and Jasper Teague in the jumps.
Thompson clocked a personal best of 52.00 to take first place honors in the 400 meters and Jacobson outdueled Levi Vander Geissen of Western Christian to take home the victory in the 1500 meters. Jacobson ran a personal best of 4:07.69 in his win. The senior also finished third in the 800 meters behind two 4A runners and clocked a personal best of 2:02.41. Peitsch led home a contingent of Loggers in the 3000 meters with a second place finish of 9:44. He was followed by Gavin Jasper in fourth place, Logan Affolter in fifth and Kyler Rodriguez in sixth. All three ran personal best times in the race.
In the high jump, Teague set a personal record of 5-feet-10 inches to finish second. Though Teague jumped the same height as the winner, Stephen Handran of Kennedy was awarded the victory due to a tiebreak scenario.
On the girls side, Aemlia Graham ran a season best in the 400-meter dash and finished in second place and Faith Pedersen finished ninth overall in the girls 300-meter hurdles.
Knappa’s strength came out in the field events as Lucy Oien and Nadia Gremar both had standout events in the throws. Oien threw a personal best of 34’11 in the shot put to finish third. She was joined by Addison Morrill in the shot put, who finished in eighth place. Oien came back and won the javelin in a season best throw of 110’11 and Morrill finished seventh in a personal best of 82’10. Gremar finished second place in the javelin with a throw of 112’9.
