Local track and field athletes lit up the track this past week in their district-qualifying meets.

With state berths and league titles on the line, runners, jumpers and throwers from Astoria, Seaside, Warrenton and Knappa had successful results. Knappa boys took home a team district title, a Warrenton senior booked another ticket to state, Astoria girls had a strong performance and a Seaside freshman flew across the track.

Knappa boys take crown

In an epic back-and-forth showdown with Vernonia High School, the Knappa boys track team took it home by one point. The 128 to 127 victory for Knappa was once again on the back of its strong distance team. Senior Wyatt Jacobson and junior Paul Thompson took home individual titles for Knappa, while Rowdy Justus, Oskar Peitsch, Logan Affolter, Kyler Rodriguez and Gavin Jasper all had state-qualifying runs or personal bests on the day.

Thompson ran a personal best 51.12 to win the 2A-SD1 District 1 Championship and then doubled back to finish second in the 300 hurdles. His time of 43.53 in the hurdles was the first time Thompson broke the 44-second barrier in the event. He was joined in the win column by Jacobson, who was victorious in both the 1500 and 3000. Jacobson had to outlast talented Nestucca senior Jonah Higdon. The Loggers senior ran a personal best of 4:05.35 in the 1500 meters, while Higdon stopped the clock in a personal best time of 4:06.19. Jacobson was joined by teammates Justus and Peitsch in the top five. Justus ran a personal best of 4:12.35 and Peitsch had a personal best of 4:21.22.

Knappa did even better in the 3000 meters as it occupied three out of the first four spots.

Jacobson once again out-dueled Higdon by nearly four seconds as he ran a time of 9:09.86. Jasper and Justus were also state qualifiers with third- and fourth-place finishes. Jasper ran a personal best of 9:18.00 and Justus stopped the clock with a time of 9:20.87. The Loggers also qualified a freshman for state in the 800 meters. Rodriguez finished second with a personal best time of 2:08.02, while his teammate Affolter clocked a personal best of 2:08.98.

Kade Kinder will also join the distance runners in Eugene, as he finished third in a season best time of 11.65 in the 100 meters.

In the field events, Tanner Cagwin, discus, and Jasper Teague, high jump, also booked their tickets to Eugene.

The girls were highlighted by senior Aemilia Graham, Faith Pedersen and Emma Jackson. Graham qualified for state in the 200- and 400-meters, Pedersen qualified in both the 100- and 300-hurdles and Jackson qualified in the 1500- and 3000-meters. Jackson ran a personal best of 5:05.19 in the 1500 and cruised to victory in the 3000. Graham ran a personal best of 1:02.94 in the 400-meters.

The field events were once again led by sophomore Lucy Oien, as she won both the shot put and discus. Nadia Gremar finished second place in the javelin.

The Lady Loggers finished third overall in the District Meet with a team score of 95. This was behind winners Portland Christian, who had 152 and Nestucca, who finished with 134.

Astoria senior doubles up

Astoria distance runner Will Laman ended his career as a double league champion.

The senior outraced his rival Diego Velazquez of Tillamook in both the 1500- and 3000-meters to claim a league title. In the process, Laman booked a return ticket to Hayward Field in Eugene. Laman ran a 4:19.74 to take home first place in the 1500 meters and then clocked a 9:10.23 to win the 3000-meters by over 6 seconds. The best performance of the 3000 meters came from Astoria freshman Turner Boslar. Boslar finished third in a massive personal best of 10:07.50. This was 23 seconds quicker than his previous best time in the event.

Laman will enter state ranked No.14 in the 1500-meters and No. 5 in the 3000-meters. His season time of 9:04.37 is within range of his personal best of the 8:59 he ran last season. Jaxson Stovall of Marshfield enters as the favorite with a season time of 8:42.94, but the other positions behind him are up for grabs.

Fellow senior Jacob Biros had the other strong on track performance as he finished second in the 300-meter hurdles. Biros ran a personal best 41.11 to finish behind Scappoose athlete Bennett Fink and qualify for state.

In the throws sophomore Magnus Kryzanek finished second in the shot put and fourth in the discus. The second place was good enough for Kryzanek to qualify for Eugene and build off his big personal best of 49-feet-7.5-inches at the Dick Baker Invitational back on May 9.

In the overall team competition Astoria boys finished fourth, while the girls put up a strong second place performance. Scappoose with 207 points took home the boys crown and Tillamook outlasted Astoria with a total score of 164.5 to Astoria’s 148.5.

Astoria girls led by strong field events

Much of the scoring for the Lady Fish came from their arms and legs at their field events.

In the throws, senior Amelia Nemlowill and Cadence Sopko finished in the top two to earn automatic qualifying bids to state. Nemlowill finished second in the discus and threw a personal best in the shot put to finish fourth. Sopko meanwhile, led home a strong Astoria contingent in the javelin. The sophomore took first with a throw of 115-feet-1 inches. Sofia Nygaard finished third and Roberta Chavez was fifth and also placed third in the shot put. Paige Kindred finished third in the discus with a season best throw of 93-feet-3 inches.

The jumps were also successful for Astoria girls as they won the high jump, finished second in the pole vault and took home victories in the long and triple jumps.

Freshman Zoe Wright won the high jump with a personal best of 5-feet-1.75 inches, Clara Moore finished second in the pole vault, second in the long jump and first in the triple jump. Ayla Gustafson won the long jump championship with a jump of 15-feet-9 inches and finished second in the triple jump with a season best of 33-feet-8.5 inches. Keturah Jackson rounded out a top three sweep for the Fishermen with a third place finish and personal best jump of 32-feet-9.75 inches.

Seaside led by dynamic freshman and steady senior

Seaside freshman Will Flores lit up the track once again in his showdown with Scappoose senior Cameron Dierdorff.

The two squared off in the boys 800-meter run and put on a show for the crowd at St. Helens. They separated themselves early from the pack and ran together for the entire race. Flores got the best of Dierdorff down the stretch as he ran to a personal best time of 1:55.27 to take home the victory slightly over Dierdorff, who finished at 1:55.75. Third place Ryan Sheets ran a personal best of 2:00.02 to also qualify for state.

This showdown is the first of two to end the season, as the Cowapa league athletes are the top two seeds going into the state title fight. With Dierdorff also qualifying for the 400 meters, the senior will have a chance to complete the difficult double if he chooses too.

Joining Flores in the top three was Alex Bilyeu, who placed third in the 300-meter hurdles. In what turned into one of the fastest races of the meet Bilyeu clocked a personal best of 42.42 to finish behind Bennett Fink of Scappoose and Jacob Biros of Astoria.

Seaside boys had a good showing in the jumps as Tristan Erspamer finished second in the pole vault to book his trip to Hayward Field and the Seagulls had a three, four, five in the high jump. Trey McCleary jumped a personal best of 5-feet-6.5 inches to finish third. He led home his two teammates Gavin Swedenborg and Jack Boles, who finished fourth and fifth.

On the girls side, senior Maddie Menke qualified for state in three events. Menke took home first place in both the girls 1500- and 3000-meter events, then won the girls pole vault. She also finished in a tie for third with her teammate Ella Clyde in the girls long jump.

She was joined in the qualifications by junior Clover Bellew. Bellew had a strong meet as she ran a personal best in the 300 hurdles, then finished third in the high jump.

In the team scores, Seaside boys finished fifth with 82 points and then girls were also fifth with 97 points.

Warrenton senior sets meet record

When talking about a Warrenton senior breaking a meet record, the initial thought would go to distance runner Jayden Warner. The University of Oregon commit has broken every possible record during his illustrious career, but there’s another Warrenton senior who is also going out guns blazing.

Sprinter Brenna Qualm has led the Warrenton girls on the track for the last four years, and made sure to go out with a bang last week at Lewis and Clark Stadium.

Competing in three events, the senior qualified for state in all of them. Qualm finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.04, second in the 200 meters with a 27.17 and finished first in the girls 400 meters with a personal best of 59.23. Not only did Qualm win the race, but she also set a meet record in the process. In fact, the top three finishers all obliterated the previous record of 1:03.63 making last Thursday’s race the fastest ever.

The time of 59.23 has Qualm ranked No. 7 in the state at 400 meters going into this weekends state championships at Hayward Field in Eugene. This will be her final race representing the Warriors before she attends Oregon Institute of Technology in the Fall.

Other Warrenton girl athletes to have strong meets were Stella Harvey and Frances Taggart. Harvey and Taggart both jumped personal bests in the triple jump and Taggart finished seventh in the girls long jump with another personal best.

On the boys side, Rueben Ramirez continued his strong season in the 400 meters. The junior ran a personal best time of 53.02 to finish second and grab the second state qualifying spot. Other strong performers were Ashley Wiley in the shot put and Sam Smith in the triple jump. Wiley uncorked a personal best throw of 40-feet-0.75 inches to finish third in the event and Smith jumped 38-feet-9 inches to finish third behind Banks pair Chase Tabb and McKay Grossnickle.
