Liverpool handed injury blow in pre-season win over Sunderland as Iraola confirms trio’s upcoming return
Liverpool have been dealt an injury blow after Joe Gomez was forced off in their pre-season win over Sunderland.
Goals from Kieran Morisson, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa and Lewis Koumas gave the Reds a 4-2 win in Nashville, Tennessee.
But Gomez was forced off after just ten minutes, and boss Andoni Iraola admits it is a big blow to lose the defender.
“Probably the worst news has been straight away the injury of Joe,” he said.
“We were happy because we were going through training without losing any players and unluckily for us we’ve lost Joe straight away.”

Liverpool are still without several first-team players due to their participation in the World Cup, but three of them are set to join up with the squad shortly.
“They are already there in Chicago, they are waiting for us, Alex [Isak], Flo [Wirtz] and Ryan [Gravenberch],” Iraola said.
“They will start training from tomorrow with us and we still have two more games [in the USA]. I hope we use them properly and we go [forward] improving slowly, slowly the things that today didn’t work.”
