The Colorado athletic department is entering a transition period, with former athletic director Rick George taking an AD Emeritus role and Fernando Lovo taking over as the university's next athletic director.
Lovo's first day on the job was January 1, but George will stay on through the end of the school year to ease the transition process. Lovo is the former Vice President/Director of Athletics at New Mexico, and in his one year at the helm, led the Lobos to eight Mountain West titles.
Lovo, 37, made notable moves at New Mexico by hiring head football coach Jason Eck, who then led the Lobos to a 9-3 record and their first nine-win season since 2016. He also hired men's basketball coach Eric Olen, widely regarded as one of the best hires of the offseason after Olen led UNM to a 10-2 start this season.
Lovo will be charged with generating significant revenue for an athletic department that is currently in the red and recently signed its head football coach to a record-breaking contract. He will also navigate the Buffs through the ever-changing landscape of college athletics, including NIL, revenue sharing and the transfer portal.
