Colorado football and the rest of Colorado athletics are in the middle of a financial reset, and athletic director Fernando Lovo says the early returns have been encouraging.
In his first five months on the job, Lovo said the move to Boulder has gone smoothly personally, but professionally, the challenge has been getting up to speed and figuring out what makes CU tick. Lovo sat down with the Daily Camera's Brian Howell to discuss the first steps (subscription required) and highlighted what tops his to-do list at the moment.
Near the top is adding naming rights for Folsom Field and the CU Events Center, with the former having never had a naming-rights partner.
"That's a big priority for me," Lovo told Howell. "We've been really aggressive on the naming rights front. I've been involved in a number of different pitches, and we've got a great thing to sell. We've got to capitalize on some of those. We've got to close some of those deals. We're pushing really hard."
Colorado's athletic department is facing a projected $27 million deficit, and adding naming rights to both major athletic facilities could make major inroads. Year-round use of Folsom Field and the CU Events Center is also something that Lovo hopes to accomplish in the near future.
"We're going to be very creative," Lovo said. "We're going to uncover every stone to try to find a vertical of revenue that doesn't exist right now."
Naming rights seem imminent at Colorado, and perhaps even something that could come to fruition before the start of the football season in late August.
