The city awoke Sunday morning to the cheers of spectators watching thousands of athletes leap into the Rock River for the first leg of IRONMAN 70.3 Rockford.
The race is starting with a 1.2 mile swim down the Rock River from just north of the UW Health Riverfront YMCA down to just north of Davis Park.
The athletes will then transition to a 56-mile bike ride through Winnebago County.
There are 2,267 athletes registered to compete. They come from 30 U.S. states and 19 countries around the world — 81 of them are first timers.
The first athletes entered the water at 7 a.m.
