The Detroit Lions appear to be in need of a new backup quarterback.

Kyle Allen, who was the top reserve behind Jared Goff in 2025, has agreed to terms with the Buffalo Bills, according to multiple reports Monday evening. ESPN reported it's a two-year, $4.1 million deal from the Bills that can be worth up to $6.1 million. Last offseason, the Lions signed Allen to a one-year contract worth a little under $1.3 million, and he beat out Hendon Hooker for the backup job.

Allen never saw impactful reps during the regular season, but he impressed in the preseason by completing 79.5% of his passes for 401 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions over four appearances. He had a perfect passer rating (158.3) in exhibition contests versus the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans.

The reported deal between Allen and the Bills cannot be made official until the new league year starts at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. As things currently stand, Goff is the only QB set to be on Detroit's roster when the new league year begins. C.J. Beathard finished the 2025 season on the practice squad but was not signed to a futures deal, meaning he is a free agent.
