Leipzig not in a hurry to start contract talks with coach Werner

Talks between RB Leipzig and coach Ole Werner over a contract extension are expected to take "a little longer" according to managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer.

"The process of analysing the season and looking ahead to the future will certainly take a little longer," he told the Sports Bild weekly in an interview published on Wednesday.

"We are under no pressure whatsoever, as Ole remains under contract until 2027."

Previously, Schäfer had been more assertive regarding Werner's role at the club and hinted that contract talks would take place as soon as possible.

"He's an essential component of our success. We are always interested in continuing a successful collaboration," he said after Leipzig secured a spot in the Champions League.

However, the Bild newspaper and broadcaster Sky recently reported that Leipzig's investor Red Bull had doubts regarding Werner while Schäfer wanted to renew the contract of the coach.

Following the final match of the season on May 16 against Freiburg, Werner emphasized that he felt comfortable in Leipzig.

"I believe that we did a good job, that we achieved the points target we set for ourselves heading into the season. Let's see what the summer brings," he said.

Werner arrived in Leipzig in July 2025 from Werder Bremen and successfully navigated a squad overhaul and brought in a new playing philosophy. The tally of 65 points was their second best in the Bundesliga as they finished third.
