Lucy Blair finished Legacy volleyball's opening night with 20 kills, but the number that mattered most to head coach Stephanie Dorsey might have been two.
Two matches. Two wins. For a Lady Leopards team whose core has spent years developing together, the 2-0 start offered an early glimpse of what Dorsey believes that experience can become.
Legacy swept Windthorst 25-12, 25-16 and Harrold 25-18, 25-21 to open the season without dropping a set.
“We’ve always had it in us,” Dorsey said. “A lot of these kids we’ve had since freshman year on varsity, and now we have a big group of juniors and seniors. It’s their time. They’ve been working for it.”
Blair, a junior outside hitter, delivered 10 kills in each victory. Junior setter Kendall Snodgrass supplied 36 assists across the two matches while senior Miyah Naef totaled 18 digs.
"I feel like we had a lot of fun," Blair said. "I feel like we played really well together as a team, and I just hope to keep this energy up and gain more confidence from these two wins.
Dorsey came away encouraged by more than the stat sheet, though.
Against Harrold, Legacy was forced to adjust after lineup changes disrupted its rhythm. Dorsey said the Lady Leopards "fell into a hole," creating the kind of situation that has caused problems for the program before.
This time, however, they responded.
“Coming back, that was impressive because in the past, once we get down, we stay down,” Dorsey said. “So the coming back is good.”
That response carried particular weight for a roster Dorsey has watched mature. Players who were thrown into varsity competition as freshmen are now juniors and seniors, giving Legacy a level of experience that Dorsey believes should begin to show itself in difficult moments.
“They’ve worked really hard during the summer,” Dorsey said. “We’re still growing and learning and fixing things, but they’ve been working hard.”
The matchup with Windthorst also carried a personal connection for Dorsey. Windthorst head coach Allison Bussey once played club volleyball for Dorsey, and the two have known each other for years.
“Windthorst has a very successful history of a program,” Dorsey said. “Coach Bussey, she played club for me, and I’ve known her a long time. They’re always a high-class program. They always do a great job.”
That familiarity made the matchup one Dorsey values regardless of the result.
“It doesn’t matter win or lose,” Dorsey said. “We love playing them.”
