LeBron James is preparing for a new NBA chapter after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, and his public goodbye sounded more grateful than bitter.

The 41-year-old star has informed the Lakers that he plans to continue his career elsewhere for the 2026-27 season.

People reported that James responded to a farewell message from Lakers governor Jeanie Buss by thanking the franchise and saying it was an honor to wear purple and gold.

James Said He Hoped He Made Lakers Fans Proud

Buss praised James as one of the greatest athletes in history and thanked him for eight years in Los Angeles, including the 2020 championship run. She also said James would always be a cherished part of the Lakers family, according to People.

James answered on X with his own thank-you message. “No, THANK YOU! Truly a honor to wear the [purple and gold] while trying to continuing the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint,” he wrote, according to People.

The Lakers Era Ends With a Long List of Milestones

Reuters reported that James spent the last eight seasons with the Lakers and led the team to the 2020 NBA title during the pandemic bubble season. He also became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer while playing in Los Angeles.

James made another piece of league history with his son Bronny James in October 2024, when they became the first father-son duo to appear together in a regular-season NBA game. Reuters reported that James finished his Lakers run after his 23rd NBA season and earned a record 22nd consecutive All-Star selection.

His Lakers tenure followed earlier championship runs with the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers. Reuters noted that James has four NBA titles overall, along with records for career points and games played.

He Is Not Retiring Yet

James is not walking away from basketball. Reuters reported that Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul said James has informed the Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere next season.

The NBA negotiation window opened June 30, while players cannot officially sign new deals until the league’s offseason moratorium lifts on July 6.

The Warriors Rumors Are Already Loud

The Guardian reported that James’ expected Lakers exit has increased speculation about a possible move to the Golden State Warriors, where he could team up with longtime Finals rival Stephen Curry.

Reuters also reported that speculation around Golden State grew after Draymond Green opted out of his player contract, a move that could create more flexibility for the Warriors. James has not announced his next team.

His Next Team Has Not Been Announced

James’ departure closes his longest stint with any NBA franchise. He played eight seasons with the Lakers, four with the Miami Heat and two separate runs with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

People reported that fans responded to James’ message by thanking him for the 2020 title, his scoring record and his years in Los Angeles.

James is planning to keep playing and the Lakers moving into their first post-LeBron season since 2018.
