Former NFL star and Michigan State running back Le'Veon Bell was arrested on Sunday, July 19, after a warrant was issued by Michigan police. Per reporting from the Canton Repository, part of the USA TODAY Network, he was arrested on a warrant over child support payments and is being held in the Stark County Jail in Canton, Ohio.
Bell, who was born in Ohio and played at Michigan State from 2010-12, was scheduled earlier in the day for a meet-and-greet at the Belden Village Mall in Canton.
Bell played in eight NFL seasons and was a two-time, first-team All-Pro running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2014, 2017), where he spent the first five seasons of his career. After missing the 2018 season due to a contract dispute, Bell signed with the New York Jets ahead of the 2019 season. From there, he bounced around the league before playing his last season with the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.
Before that, Bell was a running back with the Spartans, where he led the NCAA in rushing attempts (382) over 13 games in his junior season in 2012. Bell is sixth on the Spartans' all-time rushing list with 3,346 career yards.
Bell's attorney Thomas Shafer told the Repository that Bell's child support payments to his child in Michigan are being "inaccurately" assessed based on the salary he received as a former NFL player.
"His guidelines are still inaccurately being deemed based on his NFL salary and his professional boxing career," Shafer said. "This is a revolving door because he pays a number that doesn't reflect his true income. The issue will never end. The court needs to reflect his true income."
This isn't the first instance of legal trouble Bell has run into recently. In March 2025, a judge ordered Bell to pay $25 million to a female relative who accused Bell and his brother La'Vonte of repeated sexual abuse in a 2024 lawsuit. Bell has denied the allegations and neither brother responded to the suit, leading to the judge's default ruling.
