Mar. 4—With just 3.7 seconds left on the clock in overtime, down three points, Lewis-Clark State's Dylan Skaife stripped the ball away from Corban's TJ Zimmermann and called a timeout.
LC State got one more offensive possession, and following the timeout, LC State's John Lustig put up a highly contested 3-pointer in hopes of sending the game to double overtime. The shot was short and failed to hit the iron.
Game over.
The Lewis-Clark State Warriors lost to the Corban Warriors of Salem, Ore., 87-84 in the men's basketball Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament championship Tuesday at the P1FCU Activity Center in Lewiston.
Lewis-Clark State coach Austin Johnson said in a postgame interview that he believes neither the wins or losses define a team. He said that this LC State team has been great at bouncing back after adversity.
"I've got to remind myself, too, that you're never as good as you think, you're never as bad as you think," Johnson said. "And tonight sucks, tonight really sucks, especially at home and with a great crowd, but that's sports, man, and when you sign up to play sports, you gotta take the heartache and the joy that come with it; you can't just take the joy. And a good reminder that you can get your back broken in this game a little bit. But our guys are resilient. Our guys are tough. They've been phenomenal."

How it happened
The contest was tight from wire-to-wire. In the first half, the largest lead was seven points when Corban (17-14) was up 31-24 with 5:10 to go in the frame. Then LC State (24-7) went on a 10-2 run to take the lead back. There were three more lead changes before LC State led 41-39 at half.
The Warriors enjoyed Lustig's 14 first-half points as he scored nine of the first 13 points for his team.
Skaife totaled 10 points in the first half.
One issue was on the defensive side, trying to contain Zimmermann, who went off for 17 points in the first half.
In the second half, it was just as close. The teams would trade 3-pointers and then trade layups and jumpers.
Near the end of the second half, Lustig hit a tough layup around two defenders to make it 74-72 with 1:05 left in the game. Then, Zimmermann hit a jumper to tie the game at 74-74 with 40.8 seconds left.
Brandon Suber made a driving layup while being blasted in the body to put LCSC up 76-74 with 17 seconds left.
Zimmermann followed that up by bodying Grayson Hunt and sinking a close jumper from about 5 feet away to make it 76-76 with 4.5 seconds left.
Hunt had one last shot as time expired only for the ball to hit the front of the rim, sending the game to overtime.
Zimmermann took control in overtime and scored five of Corban's 11 points.
LC State stayed in the game until the very end and used some smart fouling to save time.
Peyton Nordland hit a 3-pointer with 26.9 seconds left to make it a three-point game and then made a layup to with 8.2 seconds left to put the game within three again.
What followed was the Skaife steal and the missed Lustig 3-pointer.
Johnson said that Corban was bigger and more athletic and used that to its advantage to win the game. He said the defensive play was the biggest issue to come out of the game for LCSC.
"They just played better, honestly," Johnson said. "We struggled to keep them out of the paint, whereas in the past few games, we've done a good job of that. But those guys stepped up. They got a veteran group, and they had guys step up.

"And we didn't have enough guys step up; we had some guys just really struggle, whether it was to score or defend."
Statistical Standouts
Zimmermann has a look about him that is similar to an old-school Bill "Mountain Man" Walton, but instead of red hair, blond hair. He has a long beard with long blond hair that falls to near the middle of his back.
The Corban big man was who caused the most issues for LC State on Tuesday.
Zimmermann scored 30 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had two assists and one steal.
He shot 13-of-21 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point range and was 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.
Johnson said the issue was that he forced a double team and then could dish out of it.
"We don't really double, we've never doubled," Johnson said. "And so when you double him, he can pass. He's second on their team in assists. And they have really good athletes who can finish at the rim, and they're really good cutters. So you pick your poison if you go double him. ... He's a really tough matchup."
Corban also had Joe Gould (18 points), Clyde Harris Jr. (14) and Anjay Cortez (13) in double figures.
Hunt led LC State with 22 points off the bench. He shot 9-of-12 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds while dishing out two assists.
Lustig totaled 19 points for LC. Lustig shot 8-of-16 from the field, 1-of-4 from long range and 2-of-3 from the line. He had eight rebounds and five assists as well.
Suber (12 points), Skaife (12) and Nordland (11) also got into double-digits for LCSC.
What's next?
Lewis-Clark State already clinched a spot in the NAIA Tournament, as it won the CCC regular-season championship.
LC State will find out Thursday who it plays in the first round. At the same time, the Warriors will also find out where they will be traveling to.
"We have an incredible group of seniors, and they're gonna give us as much as they can," Johnson said. "You don't chase the scoreboard, but we always talk about being the best version of us and trying to chase the best version of us. And so that's our goal, to go be the best version of us in the national tournament."
