I saw on SportsCenter this morning that it was indeed an issue with Kobe Bryant's wife that started this latest feud between them. Apparently Kobe's wife says that Karl Malone made several inappropriate comments to her before a game a few weeks ago. You never know, but that just doesn't sound right to me. It sounds like she misunderstood, misinterpreted, were just lied about those comments. it just doesn't make sense given their situation as teammates.

That said, when it comes to issues of a sexual nature I never say anything is impossible. There are just a lot of people out there who do not know how to conduct themselves properly.

Malone was not available for comment Sunday. Malone's agent, Dwight Manley, told the Los Angeles Times on Sunday that Malone was asked by Vanessa Bryant, "Hey, cowboy, what are you hunting?" in reference to Malone wearing a cowboy hat and boots. "She said it twice," Manley said, "and Karl answered, 'I'm hunting for little Mexican girls.' "

LOL - Sounds to me like she was asking for it...

Does anyone else find it ironic/hypocritical that Kobe has a problem with someone hitting on his wife?

To me it sounds like Vanessa Bryant is just as much of a B**ch as Kobe Bryant. They're perfect for each other

That was my first thought. If anyone should know about disrespecting his wife, that'd be Kobe.

Apparently Malone made some comment like, "why don't you come give me a big hug that will be on the front of every newspaper?", and that really upset her.

Give me a break!

Malone's agent had another quote where he basically said that this was just a big Kobe Bryant soap opera that Malone does not want join.

Kobe Bryant is just an idiot. His wife is starting to seem equally immature and stupid. David Stern has got to be a wondering what he did to deserve all of the stupid problems he has had to deal with so far this NBA season when the play is so much better.

Stern is probably just as giddy as he is pissed off. Not only is he going to reap the ratings rewards of the Shaq-Kobe rivalry when the Heat face the Lakers, but the NBA will also be able to sell the Malone-Kobe rivalry to potential viewers. Imagine if the Mailman signs with Heat? It will be like 'The O.C.' meets 'Hoop Dreams,' can't-miss-TV.

EXACTLY!!! :bang:

I cannot imagine for a guy who has had sex with other women (ok, so he won the Rape case...) cares SOOOOO much about other guys making comments like that. It's just so weird. The whole thing seems like a setup if you ask me.

Leave Karl alone. I think he wants to retire and just let him be. This last Lakers Drama is just plain stupid.

Another thing is IF Kobe really wants Karl to come back and help, don't you think he'll try to avoid causing conflicts between he and Karl? OBVIOUSLY, that's not the case. Karl got mad and he doesn't want to come back. I think it's Kobe's strategy of getting rid of Karl.

I could be wrong but sometimes you just need to wonder why there are always so many drama revolving around Kobe. Maybe he IS the problem?

Which is PRECISELY why the NBA sucks these days. PLaying better or not, until the league loses this individual rivalry and star versus star marketing tactic that they have now, there will always be players who think they are more important than the game, and the rest of the media will follow suit, allowing these idiots to have the spotlight not only when they are on the court, but when they are nobodies (imo) and doing completely irrelevant and for the most part, stupid stuff off the court.

I remember the good old dasy when it was "LAKERS/CELTICS - Christmas day on NBC!" Now its "Shaq vs. Kobe" and thats just a HORRIBLE way to market your league and helps create all the individual problems critcs and league execs are bellyaching about today.

LAME!

I basically agree with what you are saying, but I seem to remember that it was every bit as much "Magic/Bird" as it was "Lakers/Celtics". The difference was that Magic Johnson and Larry Bird respected each other. Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant are a soap opera. On top of that back in the Celtics and Lakers days the media covering the game actually talked about the other components of the game. We all know damn well that the only thing we will see/hear surrounding that game is how much O'Neal and Kobe Bryant dislike each other.

You guys have really got to be kidding me!

Let me get this straight: Karl Malone, the guy who is notorious for elbowing people that are at least 8 inches shorter than him and 80 pounds lighter, the guy who Suns fans have always hated, is dirty until he gets in a rift with Kobe Bryant. When that happens, he is unquestionably in the right.

That's fine if you guys want to just talk amongst yourselves, but just from somebody who is not living in your fantasy world, it doesn't really make sense. If Karl Malone said, "Why don't you come over here and give me a hug" and then when Vanessa Bryant was confused, he said, "Do you like me?" and "Can you keep a secret?" he was inappropriate. For all the married people on this board, if somebody said that to your wife, would you be upset?

And the suggestion that, because Kobe cheated on his wife 2 years ago, he should not care when men make passes at her, may actually be the dumbest thing said in this thread. At the very least, Kobe Bryant cheated on his wife, but assuming he didn't rape the girl, he may have changed. Kobe Bryant is a married man with a child, and when somebody says something inappropriate to his wife, he has every right to be upset, even if he made a game-winning jumper over Jason Kidd in the 2000 conference semi-finals!

And want to see something else that is really funny: "Karl's response to Kobe's comments today is that he's a basketball player and not a soap opera actor and he doesn't intend to be involved in a personal soap opera," Manley said of his client.

I find that seriously hard to believe, considering the fact that Kobe Bryant made a perfectly harmless comment on a radio show a few days ago and Karl Malone blew up about it. So, Kobe says he's happy without Malone, thought he'd love to have him, Malone and his agent both cry to anyone and everyone who will listen, and then when people make a big deal about it, Malone says he doesn't want to be involved in a soap opera.. Logically, that makes no sense.

Unless of course, you're living in a fantasy world.

You seriously think that's what's happening here? I think all the people involved are idiots, just because someone calls out Kobe and not Malone in a post doesn't mean he thinks that Malone is unquestionably right.

First of all let me just say that I can't stand Karl Malone. He's not quite as high on my NBA hate list as he once was, but I definitely don't like him. I just fail to see how elbowing people in basketball games has anything to do with this situation. It seems to me that Kobe Bryant's past behavior is much more pertinent, and you have dismissed its significance in this situation quite easily.

You have taken Malone's quote out of context. He didn't say, "why don't you come over here and give me a hug." He said, "why don't you sit by me and give me a big hug that would be on the front cover of every magazine in the country?" To me it sounds like he was just making a joke about how the media would make it a big deal. The article I read did not include your quotes about asking if she liked him and could keep a secret.

Look, even Kobe Bryant says that when Malone was confronted about this Malone apologized and offered to apologize to Bryant's wife.

"He said, 'I'm sorry if I said anything, if I was out of line, I'll apologize.' What he said is what he said. This thing went on for a while. My wife isn't going to sit there and exaggerate something or blow something out of proportion that doesn't need to be blown out of proportion. She felt uncomfortable being around the dude to the point where she felt like she had to call his wife and tell his wife, 'Your husband's acting out of control right now.' "

I don't think anybody is saying that they love Karl Malone or that he hasn't been an idiot in this whole situation either. I thought he overreacted to Kobe Bryant's radio comments as well, but that's because I didn't know at that time about all of this junk that Malone was putting up with already.

The story:

Pelinka, who works for SFX and has been Bryant's agent for four years, said he was told what transpired last month by Kobe and Vanessa Bryant.

"Karl and his son were at the game sitting in the front row," Pelinka said. "Vanessa was on the cell phone talking to Karl's wife, Kaye, and Vanessa said that her son looked bored. Kaye told her to call Karl to have her son join her in her seats. Kaye gave Vanessa Karl's cell number and she called him. When she called, Karl's response was, 'Why don't you come over here and sit next to me and give me a big hug?' Vanessa said, 'Why? For what?' And Karl replied, 'If you do that it will be on the cover of every magazine in the country.'

"Vanessa didn't know what to say because this was the first time she had ever spoken to Malone without Kobe or Kaye being around. Karl continued. 'Do you like me?' Malone asked her, to which Vanessa said, 'As my friend, Kaye's husband,' " Pelinka said.

"From there Malone asked Vanessa if she could keep a secret, and that he would like to tell her something. At which point Vanessa told him she was a married woman and he was a married man who was old enough to be her father. To which Malone replied, 'Oh, like your daddy?' At that point she told me she ended the conversation," Pelinka said.

In the second half of the game, Malone sent his son to sit with the Bryants.

"Vanessa told me that she just was very uncomfortable at halftime and that Karl was acting and saying weird things." said Pelinka. "When the game ended, Vanessa walked Malone's son back to Karl. She told me that she asked Malone why he was wearing that [cowboy] hat. His response was, 'I'm hunting for young Mexican girls.' At which point Vanessa just walked away."

On the car ride home, Vanessa Bryant told Kobe what had happened. Vanessa decided to call Kaye Malone and tell her about the way her husband had spoken to her. After they hung up, Kobe Bryant called Karl Malone on his cell phone.

"Kobe told me that Karl just listened and didn't deny any of it. Kobe said Karl's only reply was, 'You know me, man.' To which Kobe told him, 'That's right, I do know you -- and stay away from my wife,' " said Pelinka. "The next day, with all four of them on the phone, Karl denied it. At that point the Bryants knew that there was nothing left to talk about since they knew Karl wasn't telling the truth. Vanessa told me that she told Kaye that she wanted her to know 'just exactly what your husband did and you do what you want with the information.' "

I tell you one thing, if your friend's wife has to remind you that she's married, you've stepped WAAAAAAAY over the line, joking or not. Rumor has it Karly was drunk....that would explain him acting like an idiot...

"Oh, like your Daddy?" - Karl Malone.

First of all, let me say that is an awesome quote. I always knew Karl Malone was kinda kinky.

Second of all, I can understand how Vanessa might have misunderstood Karl's first few comments. When he said, "Come over here and give me a big hug so it'll be on the cover of every magazine" or whatever, I can understand how Vanessa might have just taken it the wrong way. Karl could have just been mocking the situation where whatever the Lakers did last season, it was blown up and dramatized by the media. However, once somebody says, "I'm a married woman and you're a married man who is old enough to be my father," and is obviously feeling uncomfortable, you say, "Oh, I'm sorry, you know I'm just kidding" and maybe try to laugh it off.

You don't say, "You mean, like your daddy."

The simple fact is, going off of the things I have read, it is not a situation where Kobe is kind of wrong, and Karl Malone is kind of wrong. Kobe is zero percent to blame here.

All of this crap about Kobe Bryant making soap operas is exactly that: crap. When Phil Jackson wrote a book about all of Kobe's childish behavior, Kobe said nothing about Phil Jackson's behavior. He could have fired back, but he didn't. When Kobe and Shaq had their rifts, Shaq and Phil were always the ones going to the media to complain about it. When other people say stuff about Kobe, he almost always takes the high road and doesn't worry about the media's overdramatization of things. This situation is no different. Karl Malone made a few inappropriate comments to Kobe's wife, Kobe tried to handle the situation personally, and he never talked about it. Then, on a radio show, he made perfectly okay comments, and Karl Malone blew up. The fact that anybody is talking about the rift between him and the Bryants is totally because Malone made a mountain out of Kobe's mole-hill comments on some local radio show.

It seems to me that Karl Malone knew he wasn't going to feel comfortable playing again with the Lakers, so he tried to make it look like another Kobe player-personel mishap. I knew it was weird that Karl Malone would feel so hurt and upset by Kobe saying, "We can't really look over our shoulder for Karl all the time; as it stands now, we have to play with what we have." Now, it makes perfect sense. Karl knew he wouldnt' feel comfortable playing with Kobe after he made an inappropriate pass at his wife, and he tried to make everybody in the media blame it on Kobe.

Unfortunately, the truth messed that up.

Huh? If you're going off of the things you read, it isn't a "simple fact." It's hearsay. The real simple fact is only Kobe's wife and Karl know what happened.

Whoever is to blame is irrelevant, because we'll never know the truth. Kobe choosing to take this public is what has me shaking my head.

OK. If in fact that is the conversation they had I really don't have a problem with the way he handled it. I had only read the part about the hug and the cowboy/Mexican exchange.

I'm just glad none of this crap happens to the Phoenix Suns... unless you count the head coach sleeping with the wife of a major sponsor or your star player being arrested for assaulting his wife over a french fry. :)

Yeah, you gotta give the Colangelo's credit for trying to keep the Suns free of problem-prone players. Considering how young this team is now, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise to see a Sun get in some minor trouble this year, but all of these guys really seem to be good people. The one guy I'm worried about..?

Steve Nash. I could just see him grabbing Leandro and Zarko and knocking off a grocery store or something. He's just way too clever with the basketball to be trustworthy.

For what it's worth, though, something can happen to anybody. Whatever you believe to be the truth of the Kobe Bryant rape fiasco, you gotta admit that some people are always looking for opportunities to take advantage of rich athletes. Considering their wealth, and the fact that the media has no problem trying to drag down a good person, they're relatively easy targets. You kinda gotta worry about a guy like Amare Stoudemire, who sometimes seems to think he's the center of the universe, getting into some trouble where a girl accuses him of something. It was like that Penny Hardaway thing a few years back, when the mother of his child accused him of pointing a gun at her. If that was 1996, and he wasn't recovering from career-lengthening/ending microfracture surgery, that would've been on the cover of every sports page in America. Amare is a young, handsome, charismatic budding superstar. To some, he's a prime target.

And let's not act as though you guys wouldn't be rooting for Kobe if he was on the Suns right now.

Something like this should have been kept to themselves!!

Kobe should never have told anyone about this, after all the problems he is having with women.

Can you imagine what the other players on the lakers are thinking these days in regards to Kobe Bryant?

:talk: :offtopic:

If they are married they are thinking that they better keep their on the road women rising a secret from Kobe Bryant. You know at least a few of those guys are really sweating this.
