There's a lot of merit to the Boston Celtics holding onto superstar forward Jaylen Brown and running back a core roster of him and Jayson Tatum again in 2026-27.
The question, at this point, is really about if that's even possible.
The Celtics tried to trade Brown once already this offseason and are reportedly willing to include him in other deals for the right pieces. Brown is reportedly frustrated with the organization, which seems completely understandable.
However, the most recent reporting from Marc Stein and Jake Fischer isn't great for the Celtics if they do intend to move Brown, as we've heard.
According to the reports, the Los Angeles Clippers don't intend to pursue Brown, knocking out one potential suitor. Also, the Portland Trail Blazers don't intend to trade Jrue Holiday, even after acquiring Ja Morant, which likely knocks them out of the running for Brown. If Portland is interested in acquiring Brown, Holiday would have been a very desirable return for the Celtics.
If the C's do want to trade Brown, they are losing leverage by the minute. If they don't want to trade Brown because of that, then they've got a lot of repairs on the relationship ahead of them.
Drafted No. 3 overall by the Celtics in 2016 out of Cal, Brown has more than exceeded expectations. A five-time All-Star and a two-time All-NBA selection, he finished sixth in the MVP voting this season, carrying the organization in the wake of Jayson Tatum's recovery from Achilles surgery.
Brown averaged 28.7 ppg. He's helped the Celtics get to two NBA Finals in his career and was named MVP of the Finals in 2023-24 as the C's toppled the Dallas Mavericks.
Again, these teams have to have assets that the Celtics are interested in, but the Atlanta Hawks could be interested, and with Brown hailing from Atlanta, he could have interest too.
How about the Toronto Raptors? If they are interested in trading for Kawhi Leonard, why wouldn't they be interested in Brown, who carries a similar profile but in a younger and healthier body?
The New Orleans Pelicans could be a potential destination as well.

With NBA Free Agency set to begin at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, there will likely be a rush to get a Brown trade done, you'd have to imagine. Teams will want to understand their budgets and roster needs before diving into free agency, and the Celtics would like to know what exactly they have to work with in free agency as well.
