Latest Alec Pierce injury update from one Colts' coach

Prior to training camp starting, Indianapolis Colts' GM Chris Ballard said that wide receiver Alec Pierce was a week or two away from returning from offseason ankle surgery.

However, as we near the two-week mark since the Colts' first training camp practice, it is still not known when Pierce will return to the practice field. He currently remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

That said, all updates from head coach Shane Steichen have been positive, and wide receivers coach Reggie Wayne echoed similar sentiments recently.

"He's upbeat, and if he's upbeat, that means he's where he wants to be and where he needs to be," Wayne said, via the Indy Star.

Pierce is known for the home run ability he brings to the Colts' offense. However, as we saw last season, he can provide much more than that.

During his time with the Colts, Pierce's route-running abilities have greatly improved, and with that, have come more opportunities to attack other levels of the field while doing so in a variety of ways.

As the team's top wideout, how Pierce is utilized within the offense will have to keep expanding.

"He's definitely locked in," Wayne added. "I just got through talking with him about his rehab and where he is, and I'm excited for him, man."

Without Pierce, as well as Josh Downs recently, the questions around the Colts' depth at wide receiver have only increased over the last two weeks. When it comes to a potential addition to bolster this unit, Steichen said on Sunday that the team is "always looking."
