Alec Pierce accepted $114 million to avoid NFL Free Agency and reignite Indianapolis Colts fans this offseason. Yet Pierce landed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list during the start of NFL Training Camp.

Pierce is nursing a surgically repaired ankle from the 2025 season. He underwent the knife in March which also took him out of minicamp.

Yet even head coach Shane Steichen and Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard have no clarity on Pierce’s return. That’s according to ESPN Colts insider Stephen Holder.

“Steichen said he still does not have any clarity on when No. 1 receiver Alec Pierce might return to the lineup after offseason ankle surgery,” Holder wrote. “Pierce, according to GM Chris Ballard, will spend a week or two’ on the physically unable to perform list. But it’s not clear that he’s closer even as the Colts begin their second week of camp.”

Pierce quietly emerged as one of the league’s top field stretchers. He’s entering the 2026 season putting together consecutive 20-yard average yards per catch seasons: 22.3 in 2024 and 21.3 last season. But the latter production came with Indy rolling with two starters in Daniel Jones and then, late addition Phillip Rivers. The former was putting together career-best numbers before losing the rest of his 2025 with a season-ending ailment.

Pierce, though, isn’t ruled out for the season with his NFL Injury. He’s likely earning the rest before Indianapolis opens the season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13. Steichen faces a make-or-break season as he’s yet to take the Colts to the playoffs in his coaching run.
