A grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning by Riverton Parke junior Aubri Morman capped a late-inning surge that helped the Panthers secure a 12-5 victory over Clinton Prairie for a Class A high school softball regional title Tuesday night.
Riverton Parke rallied from early deficits of 3-2 and 4-3 to get the win, and the Panthers’ second straight regional title.
Riverton Parke held a tight 6-5 lead over the host Gophers going into the bottom of the sixth. Morman’s grand slam stretched the Panthers’ advantage to 10-5, and they added two more insurance runs.
In the process, Morman became Riverton Parke’s career runs-batted-in leader with 50, eclipsing Sarah Burnham’s previous record.
Also Tuesday, Jacee Stonebraker broke the school record for runs scored in a season by tallying her 50th.
The Panthers outhit Clinton Prairie 13-6, and the Gophers committed four errors, while Riverton Parke had three.
With the win, the Panthers advance to Saturday’s Class A Frontier Semistate, where they’ll face Southwood (17-7) at 11 a.m. The Knights won their regional Tuesday, beating Union City 13-1.
South Central (20-8) plays North Newton (17-8) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the second semistate semifinal. Winners will clash for the title at 7 p.m.
Clinton Prairie finished 18-10.
