Was looking at the past season, and especially ones where Dansby was mic'd up. Say what you want, but he was clearly the emotional leader and the one calling the defensive plays upfront. If this defense retains a formidable presence, it will be because a veteran like Foote takes on the roles which Dansby did so well

I think more folks than Foote are going to decide this defense, Larry will most likely just be a Foote note.

Well, look at the tape from last year. Dansby is good but was great by those around him AND WHAT HE MADE THOSE AROUND HIM ACCOMPLISH. Peterson, Dockett and Campbell played their butts off but it was Dansby who seemed to be directing that destruction on the offense. Washington seemed to also be acting on the decisions of the Dansby brain trust of me, myself and I. Larry is going to have to be the coach, leader and emotional spark plug that Dansby was and Minter in his second year would shock me to be all of that in a top 5 defense being so young :)

But Foote is no Dansby, not in physical talent, and not in team leadership. I wish I agreed with you on this one, it would make the future I see look a lot more Superbowlish. It's Dockett's locker room for the most part, Foote just needs to learn the system and do his job IMO.

Based on what exactly???

Foote was a defensive captain and called plays on the Steelers defense for 5+ years. That's a lot of leadership right there.

I second BACH's question. His experience will be essential to any success the defense has. The problem is that neither he nor Kevin Minter has the speed that was lost with the departure of KD and DW. But, imo, we're good with leadership.

Truthfully I did not know he was a Capt on the Steelers, that's great to hear. Hopefully he can digest the playbook quickly.

Everything we have heard from the coaching staff is that Minter will be taking on Dansby's role of defensive playcaller and making sure everybody is lined up properly. Foote will be in Washington's role - not the leader of the D.

So you are saying the one making the calls is automatically the leader back there? Are you saying that when Minter looks around confused, the 'leader' Foote is not going to tell the young man what he should do? Are you saying that this defense is going to look to a young player who hardly stepped on the field last year as the man they are going to follow, and by follow I mean suck it up when times are bad or when something has to get done get emotional support? Sorry, I think it will be Foote :)

I see no reason why Foote is going to be a deciding factor this year. ILBs don't normally make huge impacts and those that do, tend to do so with speed. Foote doesn't have that.

Minter making the calls makes more sense, because we plan on having him around for a while. If he develops nicely, this new Org has shown they will pay to have their draftees/inner talent stay. I think Foote can help out where he can, lots of leadership and experience there but it looks like we learned what happens when you let a short timer run the show... they can bounce. D-Wash might make a good leader, he definitely shows up for games, the piss tests... he shows up like Peyton Manning in most of his Superbowls.
