The Los Angeles Chargers will enter the 2026 season with plenty of optimism, but there is also a fair amount of uncertainty surrounding the defense. After a coaching change that saw Jesse Minter depart and Chris O’Leary take over as defensive coordinator, the Chargers will need some familiar faces to help guide the unit through the transition. Fortunately, they have two of the best veteran leaders in the NFL in Khalil Mack and Derwin James.

Whenever a new defensive coordinator arrives, there is an adjustment period. Even if the overall philosophy remains similar, terminology, responsibilities and play-calling tendencies can change. That is where veteran leadership becomes invaluable. The Chargers have several young players who are expected to contribute, but it will be Mack and James who set the tone.

Mack continues to defy Father Time. Entering his 13th NFL season, the veteran pass rusher remains one of the most respected defenders in football. The Chargers made it a priority to bring him back this offseason because of what he brings both on and off the field. His production has remained strong, but his leadership may be even more important in 2026.

The Chargers have invested heavily in their defensive front over the past few seasons. Players like Tuli Tuipulotu and rookie Akheem Mesidor will be counted on to contribute. Having a player like Mack in the room gives those younger defenders someone to learn from every day. His preparation, work ethic and football IQ are exactly what teams want their younger players to emulate.

Then there is Derwin James, who remains the heartbeat of the defense. The Chargers rewarded him with an extension this offseason, making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL. The move was a reflection of just how valuable he is to the organization.

James is one of the league’s most versatile defensive players. He can play deep safety, line up in the box, cover tight ends, blitz off the edge and serve as an extension of the coaching staff on the field. With a new coordinator calling the shots, his ability to communicate adjustments and get teammates lined up correctly will be critical.

The Chargers have talent throughout the defense. Teair Tartt returns after earning an extension. Daiyan Henley has developed into one of the team’s most promising linebackers. The secondary also has several young players who could take significant steps forward this season.

Still, talent alone does not guarantee success. Defensive units often take on the personality of their leaders, and the Chargers’ leaders are clearly Mack and James. They have been through playoff runs, coaching changes and difficult stretches. Their experience will be invaluable as O’Leary implements his vision for the defense.

If the Chargers are going to field one of the AFC’s top defenses in 2026, the veterans will need to lead the way. Fortunately for Los Angeles, few teams are better equipped in that department than a defense anchored by Khalil Mack and Derwin James.
