England's Ben Lane says he and Sean Vendy got the gold medal they were "desperate" for with their European Championships triumph.

The second seeds became the first English pair since 1998 to win the men's doubles event.

They beat the defending European champions, France's Christo and Toma Junior Popov 21-15 21-16 in the final in Huelva, Spain.

Vendy, 29, said: "We came into this tournament with one goal in mind, which was the gold medal.

"I feel like we have played at a really good level all week, and we are really happy to be on the top step of the podium."

The 28-year-old Lane added: "We came into this week desperate for a gold medal. We haven't won gold here before, so it was a big goal for us this season."

Another English pair, Alex Green and Zach Russ, finished third to claim the bronze medal.
