Former soccer star Landon Donovan was among those who celebrated the USA’s 4-1 blowout victory against Paraguay on Friday night at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

The 44-year-old, who registered 57 goals and 157 caps for the USA from 2000 to 2014, took to social media to congratulate them for the stellar performance, especially after the Stars and Stripes dominated the proceedings in the first half.

“Best half of soccer I’ve seen this team play. So fun to watch, and this crowd is electric! Christian Pulisic has been unplayable. LFG!!! @USMNT,” Donovan posted on X.

“From start to finish, that was the most enjoyable day of soccer I’ve ever experienced. Thank you to the @USMNT for inspiring a nation and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And thank you to all the fans who showed up today… Absolutely incredible. So grateful to have been there and can’t wait for next Friday,” he continued along with emojis of the soccer ball and the USA flag.

USA breaks records in dominant World Cup performance vs. Paraguay

Last night marked the USA’s best performance under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, as they controlled the game from the get-go. The Stars and Stripes went ahead early against Paraguay, courtesy of Damian Bobadilla’s own goal, and Folarin Balogun’s first-half brace and Giovanni Reyna’s late goal sealed the home victory.

Bobadilla’s own goal is the third-fastest a host nation has scored in their first match at the World Cup after France (0:35) in 1938 and Germany (5:08) in 2006. The USA also had a three-goal lead in the first half and scored four goals total for the first time in a World Cup game.

Balogun became only the second American player to score multiple goals in a World Cup game after Bert Patenaude (three) against Paraguay in 1930. Meanwhile, centre-back Tim Ream became the oldest player to appear for the USA in the World Cup at 38 years and 250 days.
