Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick made the call to have South Bay coach Zach Guthrie become a Lakers assistant coach and head of player development.
The organization is rewarding Guthrie for his work with South Bay, which had the G-League’s best record last season.
Gutherie has been an assistant coach in the NBA at various points in his career.
He had stints at the position under Quin Snyder with the Utah Jazz from 2016 to 2020, then under Rick Carlisle with the Dallas Mavericks from 2020 to 2021, and with the Washington Wizards from 2021 to 2024.

Then, last season, he took on the South Bay job and helped develop Drew Timme, Chris Manon, Kobe Bufkin, Summer League standout Arthur Kaluma, and Bronny James and Adou Thiero.
Now, he has the task of continuing to help James and Thiero, if James is still on the team, along with Cameron Carr and two-way player in AK Okereke.
Now, the Lakers have the choice of promoting from within for the G-League vacancy or hiring someone from the outside, as they did with Guthrie.

At the end of the 2025-2026 season, Redick stressed the need for depth on the Lakers’ roster, asking for improvements to compete with the Western Conference juggernauts.
“I don’t necessarily need depth as a rotation thing. Whether you play eight or nine, or whether you play 11 or 12, you need to have depth,” Redick said.
“That depth typically comes in roster spots 10 through 15. And whether that’s internal development, Draft, trade, free agency, whatever it is, we need to build depth beyond just an eight- or nine-man rotation because you’re naturally going to have injuries. You sit there and you plan all summer of how your team is supposed to play and look, maybe five games out of the 92 games we played, it was something I had planned over the offseason.
“A lot of the times you’re in a timeout and you’re looking like, ‘I never expected this lineup to be together.’ So it really is about just building that depth.”
Well, the Lakers delivered plenty of new players to him, with five major signings after losing a good deal of talent in free agency.
Now, Redick needs to show the ability to work with a completely new set of talent and, hopefully, raise the team’s ceiling.
