Lakers linked to five-team Giannis Antetokounmpo-centered trade for $20 million Heat rising star originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Luka Doncic made one thing clear to kick off the offseason: he wants the Los Angeles Lakers to scour the frontcourt market and pair him with the best possible lob threat.
Specifically, Doncic would prefer an ‘A-List center’ which likely includes the likes of Jalen Duren and Walker Kessler. Fortunately for Los Angeles, the 17-time NBA champions will have other options to pivot to if those two highly-touted big men prove to be unattainable.
According to a monster five-team, Giannis Antetokounmpo-centered trade idea proposed by NBA reporter Evan Sidery, a Miami Heat 22-year-old rising star could be one of them.
“The Lakers, (Detroit) Pistons and (Brooklyn) Nets are teams who could help facilitate a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to the Heat," Sidery wrote on X/Twitter Friday.
“Detroit has an interest in Tyler Herro, while Los Angeles recently inquired about what it would take for Kel’el Ware. A Giannis to Miami deal could involve five teams.”
Ware has completed only NBA seasons thus far, yet is already an asset many believe could continue his career elsewhere this summer. That isn’t necessarily a bad sign, though, as the Heat’s openness to moving on from the Indiana product makes sense after factoring in the fact that it could help them land the perfect superstar contributor.
What does that mean? It signals that Ware has performed well enough to be viewed as a valuable, long-term asset for a franchise in a potential blockbuster deal. In Sidery’s scenario, the Lakers would receive Ware’s multi-dimensional services and give Doncic a big man with an encouragingly high ceiling.
Ware, a reliable rim-running center who’s elevated his floor spacing chops and made a name for himself as a respectable shot blocker. The 22-year-old averaged 11.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game with the Heat this season, shooting 53.0% from the field and 39.5% from deep.
Acquiring Ware would be a future-driven move, but it could pay dividends for the franchise in an instant-impact sense.
