LeBron James will have a big decision to make this offseason. The four-time NBA champion can either take a pay cut with the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency, sign with a different NBA team or retire.

Although James has yet to confirm if he will return for the 2026-27 season, many people believe James will play at least one more season before retiring.

Lakers legend and three-time NBA champion Byron Scott, who played for and coached the Lakers, said he believes James will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers in free agency to retire with his hometown team.

“I think this is his final year with the Lakers,” Scott said on the “Byron Scott’s Fast Break” podcast. “I think he’ll go back to Cleveland and play one more year there and then get the statue and all the stuff they are going to do in Cleveland. For me, he got one more year left after this. That’s what I see. I think the city would really, really love him even more and respect the fact that he came back home for his final season, to retire a Cleveland Cavalier. I think that would be fitting.”

James’ Legacy in Cleveland

After graduating from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio, the Cavaliers drafted James with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. The Ohio native spent the first seven seasons of his career with his hometown team before signing with the Miami Heat in free agency in 2010.

James won his first two NBA championships in back-to-back seasons with the Heat in 2012 and 2013.

He returned to the Cavaliers the following season with a goal of winning the franchise’s first NBA championship. James accomplished that feat in 2016, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors.

In addition to helping Cleveland win its first NBA championship, James has also been active with helping the local community. He founded the LeBron James Family Foundation in 2004 to support kids and families in Akron, Ohio.

It would be a storybook ending for James to finish his historic career with his hometown team in Cleveland.
