Coming into their first summer league game on Friday, the Los Angeles Lakers had two players signed to two-way contracts: Peter Suder, an undrafted rookie guard out of Miami University, and forward AK Okereke, an undrafted rookie out of Vanderbilt University.
NBA teams are allowed to carry up to three players on two-way contracts at one time on their rosters. This past season, one of the Lakers' two-way contract players was Chris Mañon, a guard who went undrafted from Vanderbilt University a year ago. In Friday's summer league game versus the Golden State Warriors Gold, Mañon made all four of his shot attempts and finished with eight points, three rebounds and one assist in 18 minutes.
The Lakers had given him a two-way qualifying offer just a few days ago. Now, Mañon is officially signed to a two-way contract.
The 24-year-old New Jersey native isn't a scoring threat by any means, and he barely got any reps at the NBA level this past season. But in the G League, he averaged 10.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals a game.
Mañon is known as a tenacious defender, and that ability was on display in Friday's game. The Lakers need better point-of-attack defenders, and they will be able to take another look at him in the months to come.
