The Los Angeles Lakers have had a busy offseason, even after things started out with a bit of a mild surprise in the form of LeBron James opting to depart from the franchise. However, LeBron's departure left the team with significant salary-cap space, which fueled the trade to acquire big man Walker Kessler, along with several free-agent signings, such as Quentin Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili. With the heat of free agency finally cooling down a bit, one final specific move has been a topic of conversation when discussing Laker Land—attempting to add Atlanta Hawks wing Jonathan Kuminga.
The Lakers were also lightly linked to Kuminga before his trade from the Golden State Warriors to the Hawks, and in the prior offseason, when he was a restricted free agent. Now, it sounds as though a potential sign-and-trade could be on the horizon to make it happen for the 2026-27 NBA season.
Amid the Lakers' offseason moves, they've found themselves with a new core group around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. However, according to Khobi Price of the New York Post, the potential sign-and-trade for Kuminga could result in the Lakers parting with another member of their 2025-26 roster.
According to the report, the Hawks are willing to do a sign-and-trade with the Lakers that includes the following:
The deal makes sense if Kuminga can step into the role the Lakers reportedly envision for him. It's not impossible to see Kuminga meshing with Doncic and Reaves, but that, of course, remains to be seen. One thing this deal would also do is leave the Lakers thin in the front court, at least for now.
While the addition of Mamukelashvili will help, the team dealt Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards. They did sign Kevon Looney to a deal and still have Jake LaRavia, so it wouldn't be impossible to make things work. It'll be interesting to see how the Lakers' final roster looks ahead of the new season, and whether the somewhat light front-court depth winds up playing any role early on.
