Lakers' Cameron Carr makes unexpected statement on LeBron James' exit originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

If Cameron Carr had been drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers a year earlier, he would have received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play alongside future Hall of Fame forward LeBron James.

Ultimately, Carr arrived in Los Angeles just as James was departing (he hasn't found a new home yet but isn’t returning to the Lakers), forcing him to miss out on what likely would have been a tremendous experience.

When asked about James’ early offseason exit from the Lakers, Carr provided The California Post’s Khobi Price with a surprising response that Price and his readers couldn’t have anticipated.

“In all honesty, (I) was probably thinking more about how this (Summer League) was going to go,” Carr said Tuesday. “Me and my (summer league) teammates, I wasn’t really caught up in the moment of everything going on. Just to be present and be engaged with what’s going on, especially with this team.”

“Got a lot of older guys, things can pass by really fast. And so I was just trying to be in the moment and learn as much as I can and don’t get taken away from outside distractions of what’s going on.”

While it’s understandable that Carr has been rigorously preparing for what figures to be a great chance for him to make a lasting impression on the Lakers, it’s nearly impossible to be oblivious to what’s happening with James and Los Angeles.

Even if the No. 24 overall pick missed ESPN’s Shams Charania tweet regarding James’ departure from the Lakers initially, the word should have gotten around to him that the 22-time All-Star was destined to compete with a different franchise in 2026-27.

After all, the offseason has been centered on James’ Lakers/NBA future after becoming an unrestricted free agent, making it logical to read/listen to reports about what could come next for the four-time MVP. Apparently, Carr was too focused on the opportunity in front of him to focus on the hottest topic in the NBA, which, in all actuality, isn’t a terrible thing.
