The Los Angeles Lakers are among the many teams that badly need a center, and with options drying up, they finally got some good news about a possible target.

New York Knicks champion center Mitchel Robinson is an unrestricted free agent, and with the Knicks facing a massive salary bill, the organization is reportedly unlikely to keep him.

According to seasoned Knicks reporter Ian Begley, with an in-demand center market in free agency, Robinson should get enough suitors to make a New York return very hard.

“The Knicks are operating, planning as if they’re going to stay below the second apron…It’s going to be really tough to bring Mitchell Robinson back, assuming he gets strong offers on the open market – which he will,” Begly said on the big man.

“I think he’d have to take a pay cut to come back to New York.”

As for the Lakers, they are very interested and will explore the market to get a starting-caliber center.

“The Lakers, amid a growing pessimism that the Knicks will be able to hang onto Robinson, are also regarded as a likely suitor for the New York big man once free agency officially begins,” NBA insider Marc Stein reports.

Why Mitchell Robinson fits with the Lakers

Robinson is the perfect archetype for the Lakers — someone who can rebound, catch lobs, and protect the rim at a great level.

He can do a true rim-running job, hustling up and down and making himself a clear paint presence. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are most successful when they have a target like Robinson, who forces defenders into tough choices.

When running pick and rolls with a strong, interior guy like Robinson, the defense has to focus on the roll man or the person running the play, which would be the guard.

The main issue with Robinson is his availability — he is prone to getting injured.
