Lake Mills' Rogne wins two state titles

May 26—Lake Mills senior Knute Rogne closed out his high school track and field career with two state championships over the weekend at the state meet in Des Moines. Rogne won the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run with times of 4:23.17 and 9:25.50, respectively. Twenty-two runners qualified for the 1,600-meter run and Rogne edged out the second-place finisher, South Winn sophomore Hugh Conway, by just four tenths of a second. He won the 3,200-meter race by just over three seconds, defeating Baxter junior Max Handorf. Rogne also qualified for the state meet in the 800-meter run and as a member of the 1,600-meter medley relay. He finished eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.19, and the relay team came in fifth place with a time of 3:38.32. Rogne was joined by Nash Delger, Zach Stene and Landyn Christian. Stene also qualified in the 100-meter dash and finished in 21st place in the prelims with a time of 11.62. Senior Hayden Thompson also qualified in the long distance races, the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs. Thompson came in seventh and sixth places with times of 4:31.51 and 9:50.33, respectively. The Lake Mills girls team also qualified a number of individual and relay events for the state meet. The highest finishing event was the 4x200-meter relay team, consisting of Tatum Sauer, Cora Sauer, Mackenzie Budach and Regan Eastvold. The team finished in fourth place with a time of 1:46.52. The 800-meter medley relay team came in sixth place with a time of 1:52.13. Eastvold, Tatum Sauer, Jacklyn Gallardo and Ellie Mondt made up the relay team. The final relay team the Bulldogs qualified was the 4x100-shuttle hurdle relay, with the runners of Tatum Sauer, Faith Stene, Ari Stensrud and Cora Sauer. The team came in 19th place in the prelims with a time of 1:12.83. Budach also qualified as an individual in two field events, the high jump and long jump. Her best finish came in the long jump with an attempt of 15'6.75", good enough for 16th place. Budach landed in 17th place in the high jump a best try of 4'10". Ava Menke also qualified for a field event, the discus throw and came in 17th place with a distance of 107'7". Eastvold was the highest placing individual with a ninth-place finish in the prelims of the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.11. She missed out on making the finals by just one one-hundredth of a second. Cora Sauer came in 16th place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.84 and Gallardo finished the 100-meter prelims in 24th with a time of 15.05. Northwood-Kensett freshman Ivy Urbatsch was the lone Viking to qualify for the state meet, qualifying for three events. Urbatsch qualified in the 800-meter, 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter runs. Her highest finish was in the 3,000-meter run, in which she made the podium, coming in eighth place with a time of 10:32.62. She finished the 1,500 in 10th place with a time of 4:55.97 and the 800 in 19th place with a time of 2:23.33.
