Tennessee's Madison Messimer was named SEC Women's Golf Freshman of the Week when the league announced its weekly awards on Wednesday.
Messimer won the first individual tournament title of her college career this week at the Chris Banister Classic. The South Carolina native finished first in a field of 93 golfers as she finished the event with a three-round score of 2-under 214, leading the No. 19 Lady Vols to the team championship at the event. Tennessee finished the tournament with a team score of 5-over par, finishing 35 strokes ahead of runner-up Chattanooga. Jacksonville State finished in third place (+42) and Longwood came in fourth (+49).
Messimer closed out the tournament with a 4-under 68 after posting a score of 73 in each of the first two rounds. Her third-round score is the best round score is her best in relation to par this season. She was the only golfer to post an under par score in the final round, which was contested Tuesday at Trail Golf Course at Silver Lake in Gadsden. Alabama.
Messimer was one of four Lady Vols to finish inside the top-10 of the individual standings. Kyra Van Kan posted an individual runner-up finish with a score of 216. Kaopin Thapasit (+5) finished fifth and Sofie Engeseth finished tied for seventh with a score of 223.
