PHILADELPHIA – Well, it had to end sometime.
But if anyone saw this coming it certainly wasn’t Tammi Reiss.
Yet there she was moments after Rhode Island’s school record 17-game winning streak came crashing to a 63-59 halt against host La Salle trying to make sense of why her team had come up small.
“La Salle outplayed us. They flat-out outplayed us and they deserved to win the game,” she began after Rams uncharacteristically let 14 point first-half and 10-point third quarter leads slip away with sloppy ballhanding and lax defense. “I thought we had two great days of practice, great prep and we we're not complacent.
“We talked about it to great length about having the urgency to compete and I could tell right from jump. They were getting loose balls, We had defensive breakdowns. It was just not smooth at all tonight.
“I give La Salle a lot of credit. I think they played harder than us. They were really physical with us and took some things away that that our kids are normally are able to get.
“They wanted it more.”
It didn’t seem that way early as 6-foot-5 Albina Syla dominated the paint, pouring in 14 early points as URI surged to 24-10 lead. But what looked like a potential rout quickly changed when the Explorers went on a 15-0 run while the Rams went scoreless for 8:07, before Ines Debroise’s 3-pointer broke the spell and sent them to the locker room up 27-25.
When DeBroise’s reverse layup pushed the margin to 43-33 late in the third, Rhode Island seemed back in command, Again, it turned out to be an illusion, as La Salle answered with a 16-3 tear, regaining a 47-46 edge when first Lauren Padnode then Joan Quinn drained back-to-back 3-pointers.
That sequence really set Reiss off. “We get up, then turn the ball over and give up threes; the exact opposite of our game plan,” she lamented. “And it gave them hope. They came back and got the job done. So credit to La Salle.”
So where do the Rams go from here, following the long late night drive home? And having lost for the first time since Dec. 26 does it take any pressure off them?
“It's really hard to run the gauntlet, Reiss conceded, after the Rams fate was sealed by shooting just 3-for-14 in the fourth quarter while 15-10 La Salle went 7-for-11. “It really is.
“So you ask yourself a lot of questions as a coach. Are they tired? Are they just not mentally into it?
“Yes, it does surprise me because again, I thought we practiced really well and we were ready for the game. But if you want to really be great you don't ever say you want to lose. I think this woke them up. I don't think they like the feeling.
“They know what they were supposed to do and they didn’t do it, so there’s no message other we’ve got to regroup and be ready to play against Fordham (at home Saturday).
“And if they’re not they will beat us too.”
While Reiss was laying the hammer down, La Salle’s Mountain McGilvery realized how special this was. “Obviously that’s a really talented team and they’re unbelievably well coached,” said McGilvery, who credited the job Padnone did on URI’s leading scorer Brooklyn Gray, who was held to five points, as the key to the game. “They’re really complete, but Brooklyn Gray is the engine.
“She’s the motor there and they had to play without an engine,”
Come Saturday Tammi Reiss will try to make sure Gray and the rest are more fine tuned than they were here, saying that while the accolades they’ve been getting are nice, only one thing matters. “I care about winning the basketball game,” declared Reiss, who got 16 points and 11 rebounds from Syla, 13 from Debroise and 11 from Palmire Mbu. “Everyone else can talk about that other stuff.
“I just want us to put a good product on the floor and tonight I was disappointed with how we performed and how we executed.”
Now she’ll try to make sure this wakeup call brings them back to life.
