The Los Angeles Rams’ split with Cooper Kupp has taken on added significance after the veteran receiver helped eliminate his former team from the playoffs.

Cooper Kupp’s departure from the Los Angeles Rams last offseason was more contentious than it initially appeared, with new reporting shedding light on the breakdown that preceded his release.

Those revelations now carry extra weight after Cooper Kupp and the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Rams to secure a place in the Super Bowl.

LA Rams reportedly urged Cooper Kupp to retire

Cooper Kupp was reportedly urged by the Los Angeles Rams to consider retirement rather than being offered a renegotiated contract, according to The Athletic’s Michael Silver. The report stated the Rams cut ties with Kupp without attempting to explore a salary reduction.

Silver also reported that Kupp came to believe Rams officials cautioned potential suitors against offering more than the veteran minimum once he became a free agent.

Those warnings were said to reference Kupp’s age and injury history, which officials allegedly viewed as indicators of decline.

The situation marked a sharp end to an eight-year partnership that began when the Rams selected Cooper Kupp in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Cooper Kupp later acknowledged the relationship deteriorated by the time his release was finalised.

Cooper Kupp delivers revenge by reaching the Super Bowl

Cooper Kupp responded on the field by helping the Seattle Seahawks defeat the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship Game. The victory secured Seattle’s place in the Super Bowl and ended the Rams’ season.

Cooper Kupp recorded four receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown in the win, contributing at a key moment against the franchise he spent the majority of his career with.

The performance followed an offseason in which Kupp was released and forced to reestablish his standing.

The Seattle Seahawks will now face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, with Cooper Kupp pursuing a second championship ring.

For the Los Angeles Rams, the outcome stands in contrast to their offseason decision, as the player they urged toward retirement now prepares for the biggest game of the season.
