With the 2025-26 UNC basketball season officially in the books, we are kicking off our player review series with guard Kyan Evans.
Last year, North Carolina hit the transfer portal hard as they had a need for some guards. One of the players the Tar Heels brought in was former Colorado State guard Kyan Evans. He joined the Tar Heels after helping the Rams win the Mountain West Tournament as well as making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He was expected to be the Tar Heels' answer at point guard and while he started the year there, he was eventually replaced.
2025-26 stats: 4.0 points, 1.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists per game, 32.8 percent field goal shooting in 33 games
As mentioned above, Evans was brought in to be the starting point guard for the Tar Heels. With RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau entering the portal, it was a big target for the Tar Heels in the portal. When Evans committed, it felt like UNC had found a solution.
He was the starter when the Tar Heels opened up the year, but as the season went on, his role diminished. Evans found himself replaced in the starting lineup by freshman Derek Dixon and his role off the bench wasn't much. He struggled to find his form and was never really consistent.
He ended the year playing under 10 minutes in four of the last six games.
With Evans role and minutes diminishing towards the end of the year, it may mean he transfers again. That was before the coaching change. With UNC seeking a new head coach, it likely means he will enter the portal and have to find a new home for next season.
It would be a little surprising to see him back. With a new coach coming in, he could bring in one of his former players or hit the portal hard. Evans would be behind Dixon (if he returned) and another guard if he returned to the Tar Heels.
His status for next season in Chapel Hill is in serious limbo.
