Kurt Busch came out of retirement for one race this weekend as a way to honor his brother, Kyle Busch, who died earlier this year.

Kurt, 47, who retired from racing in 2022, changed his usual racing number from No. 1 to Kyle’s No. 8 at the Le Mans Classic in France.

“I said a couple of weeks ago that Kyle’s spirit will always ride with me, and the first time will be on one of the greatest tracks in the world this weekend,” he said in an interview with IMSA published on July 1.

“It is still incomprehensible to think he is gone, not suiting up for the next race as he did for nearly his entire life, but Kyle would have loved to have been right there racing alongside me and our friends at Le Mans,” Kurt added. “It would be great to make it a fitting tribute with a win for him in full Kyle style.”

While Kurt didn’t come in first place in the race, he did make the podium when he finished third.

Kurt’s return to the world of racing came just six weeks after Kyle’s unexpected death at the age of 41.

As In Touch previously reported, Kyle’s family announced he had been hospitalized after a “severe illness,” but just hours later, news broke that he had died.

“We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport’s greatest and fiercest drivers,” NASCAR wrote in a statement on May 21. “We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community.”
