Hours before Kyle Busch unexpectedly died at just 41 years old, the professional racecar driver passed out in a racing simulator.

According to the Associated Press, Busch was in a Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina, on Wednesday, May 20, when he lost consciousness and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The following day, the NASCAR legend’s family released a statement saying that Busch had been hospitalized with a “severe illness.” He was preparing to race in the Coca-Cola 600 this weekend, but had to cancel.

“Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization,” the family’s message shared on X read. “He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.”

However, just hours later, it was announced that he had passed away.

“We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport’s greatest and fiercest drivers,” NASCAR wrote in a statement of their own. “We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community.”

General Motors President Mark Reuss also commented on Busch’s death.

“The shocking news of Kyle’s passing is devastating to me, and to everyone at Chevrolet and General Motors. Our hearts go out to Samantha, their children Brexton and Lennix and the Busch family, everyone at RCR, Kyle’s legions of fans and all of Rowdy Nation,” Reuss said in a message shared with Speedway Digest.

He added that Busch was “a fierce competitor who found success both as a driver and team owner” and “a generous benefactor to countless families with the Bundle of Joy Fund.”

The organization was founded by Busch and his wife, Samantha, and it raises money for couples struggling with infertility.

Reuss concluded his message by saying that the NASCAR Cup Series winner “found time to be a true friend to us all.”

Along with Samantha, Busch is survived by his two children – son Brexton, 11, and daughter Lennix, 4.
