The Hagerstown Braves and Cashtown Pirates played Game 1 of the 2026 South Penn Baseball League championship series at North Hagerstown High School on Thursday, July 30. Here's what happened:
Carson Kuhns broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the fifth inning, Josh Berzonski struck out 14 in a complete-game victory and the defending champion Pirates took the series opener on the road.
Wes Coolbaugh hit a three-run home run to give Cashtown (27-10) a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Caleb Newcomber hit a two-run double down the left-field line and scored on Riley Jackson's RBI double to center as the Braves tied the game at 3 in the bottom half.
Zach Molloy doubled leading off the bottom of the sixth for Hagerstown, but was later out at third on a great throw by Kuhns from deep center field to end that threat.
Berzonski, who recently completed his collegiate career at Virginia Tech, capped his sterling pitching effort with two strikeouts and a groundout in a 1-2-3 seventh. He allowed eight hits and had zero walks.
Tyler Reinert had two of Cashtown's seven hits.
Molloy and Jackson each finished with two hits for the Braves. Wyatt Freeman allowed four runs on six hits and one walk over five innings, striking out six and walking one. Trent Culver allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two in two scoreless relief innings.
Cashtown will host Game 2 on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. Hagerstown will host Game 3 on Sunday, Aug. 2 at 1 p.m.
